Dark and Souls. This game takes so much influence from Dark Souls franchise that it's sometimes hard to remember I'm actually playing a hard 2D metroidvania. Here's why.

First of all the game world has distinctive areas. You begin from a shore (after a short playable opening) and enter a grey building. Inside you'll find a shrine, similar to a bonfire from Dark Souls that lets you heal, level up and grants access to a merchant, blacksmith etc. Shrines also let you quick travel between them which saves you from many headaches since the map has so many secret rooms, areas, clifs and nooks that it takes some time to get used to the travelling. Using the shrine respawns every slain opponent (excluding bosses of course) as does bonfire in DS.

Enemies. Most of them are your typical slow crawling zombies that takes couple of hits and pose little threat. Then there are the faster and smaller ones that are hard to catch and deal nasty damage. Big armored knights, huge hulking golems, wizards, skeletons, dragons, demons, abominations and hanged men + many, many more. Enemies, encounters and compositions varied in such ways that I feel the game encourages to experiment with gear and how to approach the fights.

Gear/items. So. Many. Light/heavy armors, swords, axes, whips, ranged weapons, hammers, one and two-handed weapons, staffs, magic, prayers and shields. Usable items for temporary buffs, throwable weapons, different kinds of arrows etc. I played through the game as a cleric in light armors, wielding a one-handed mace with both hands for extra damage, using healing spells to stay alive longer struggles.

Plot. I seriously don't know. I'm bad at concentrating in a story when I can be whacking enemies and killing huge bosses. There are NPC's aroung the world that chat with you and sell you stuff but the further I went to less I read. That's a pity but I feel that Salt and Sanctuary's strength lies elsewhere. It's in the medieval landscapes and in the combat that packs a serious punch. It's in the feeling of wonder and excitement, in failing and overcoming.

Difficulty. Hard. I used a walkthrough at times to mitigate useless running around and to check couple of bosses weaknesses. I love hard games and play for the challenge and this was the best way for me to enjoy this adventure. Some bosses take many tries to beat and few might even force you to do some extra leveling before getting past them. Bosses are nicely varied also and look similar to DS's crooked mythos.

It took me 20 hours to complete the game. I didn't get all the achievements but I did kill all the optional bosses and grinded quickly for a better gear at one point. I believe that it might take closer to 50 hours to do everything "on your own" but 20 hours was more that fine with me. Definitely worth the price. I've played games since NES so while I admit that the game was hard I felt that it was still very "doable". One of those games that take some patience ( a lot) to finish. Some gear combinations might prove harder to use than others but I haven't tested this at all.

I'm pretty sure I'll return to S&S with a different kind of character later since the leveling up forces your builds a bit limited and there's plenty of fun to be had still. You can also play with a friend on a same computer but I didn't try that either. Probably makes the game a lot more easier and more enjoyable for some.

Pros.
- Not too long not too short
- Lot's of gear to choose from
- Art (the human characters looked a little juvenile but I enjoyed everything else)
- Challenging
- Dark Souls the metroidvania

Cons.
- Leveling doesn't encourage to try different things (pick a weapon class and stick to it or else!)
- Confusing at times
- Many ways to die in a way that feels unfair (dropping from high places or being knocked back to instadeath)
- Couple of bosses will be a nerve wreck for some
- Story was weak

Pointwise I would give Salt and Sanctuary 4/5 for it is a magnificent game and the first Dark Souls-like game for me that has been enjoyable and deep. I whole-heartedly recommend this game for everyone in search of a metroidvania game, something similar to DS but not DS or challenging and hard platformer with bleak and bloody atmosphere. Buy it to support the brave devs if nothing else. Thanks for the ride Ska Studios.

Dungeons of Dredmor is a fantastic game if you haven't played any "real" roguelike games like Nethack, ADOM or Crawl and would like to make the entrance as smoothly as possible. Dredmor is hard, has permadeath (as an option!) and is procedural. Artwork is whimsical, silly and everything is covered in humor. There are jokes in item, skill and creature descriptions, in the lore and... everywhere! Tongue in cheek you seek the lord of the dungeon and try to slay him using skilltrees like Mathemagic and Communism with all sorts of weird DIY-gear from plastic arrows to tin hats.

All this might fall a bit short for those that know the genre by heart and seek both complexity and difficulty. Both exist here too but not in a sense where you want to spend hours thinking "what should I wear" and how can I survive this situation.

After toying with most of the DLC I decided to return them. I feel that the base game is decent enough for the casual strategy gamer and for those that won't stay too long with one title. There might not be all countries or events available but in my experience the basic gameplay is the same and well enough for me. Also most of the DLC were tiny content packs of unit skins and songs which are just money milking anyway. The game itself is filled with statistics and data even though I felt that most of it was useless and the really important stuff was cluttered in the middle of it all. Great game if you're willing to put tons of effort in it and got the patience to brave through the UI.

I'm one of those that can't possibly spend all the needed time just to know what I'm doing. Therefore I don't recommend CK2 unless you really like the genre.

---

That was like... my first impression. After playing ~20 hours aka 4 failed playthroughs as the same leader during the same era I'm finally hooked. I played the vanilla version so the experience still changes a lot with the DLC (for better) but this is where I started. I used 7 hours watching tutorials and still failed miserably yet the game kept growing in me. I originally returned the DLC since I was supposed to bury the game to the deepest depths of my backlog but it just popped up like that annoying smart-ass swedish kid it really is... and I love it. After fixing my error and changing the review I will buy the DLC again. CK2 is a game I will be playing for years.

Portal 2 is like Portal 1 only longer. Buy it if you liked the first one. Don't if you didn't.

After 10 years - give or take - Ancient Domains of Mystery still wakes that primal excitement in this quite cynical gamer.

ADOM is one of the first true roguelikes among Nethack and the like but was the only one of those that made me sit on my chair, scratching my hair with the decisions the game made me do, or the sheer amount of options it presented. I was stunned that you really needed almost the whole keyboard to play the game and it sure took time to learn most of the quirks. Back then the game was presented in ASCII aka by symbols like letters and numbers. Plain 'g' for goblin and 'k' for kobold.

This new Steam version has graphics in form of a tileset tho, so you don't have to learn how to "read" the game first even though it doesn't remove the fact that you still have to master them buttons. I think the tileset is very decent taking consideration the scale of the game and the amount of classes/races/weapons/etc there is.

The UI sure feels clunky though and I recommend taking your time to read through everything the first time. After generating few characters and painfully losing them you'll surely get the hang of it and the gameplay get's much smoother and faster. It's not as difficult as Dwarf Fortress but in a whole new level compared to i.e. Dungeons of Dredmor if that helps anything.

I might add and edit the review if needed but for now I just wanted to welcome my old friend to Steam and give it a nice 9/10 review.

When the game asked me to press anything to start and I pressed a light switch - nothing happened!

A must buy.

Now this will be my first review for a game that I'm never going to play further than the beginning but which I still recommend. Guacamelee is a metroid-vania type of a game where search new areas, learn skills that allow you progress further and to find new places from the old areas. You can upgrade your characters health and stamina plus buy different costumes. You can also play this game in co-op for Christ-out-loud. Go play it, like right now! I won't. Since I don't like luchadors or the setting at all :(

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a rhytm based dungeon crawler with some roguelike elements and great tunes.

CotN is a turn based game where every beat serves as a turn. This means that if you miss a beat you miss a turn. You basically need just 4 buttons to play the game: left, right, up and down. These are used also in combination to use items and spells by pressing up+left to eat an apple i.e. though you can assign a single button for these functions also.

You find consumables from the levels to heal yourself, spells like fireball or freeze and different weapons and armors. There are also diamonds that serves as a currency in the games hub where you can purchase persistent additions to your adventuring. Besides additional health the rest of the upgrades are added to the map generation for you to find.

Enemies are varied as in how often they move (in beats) and in which patterns (up and down, following you etc.) and bosses are tougher and more damage dealing creatures of course.

What makes CotN different is the rhytm-system. Roguelike-type-of-games are usually hard already but NecroDancer makes you do important decisions on the fly and likes to punish the player for hesitating. If you thought Spelunky was hard you've seen nothing (this is a warning). You have to study the movements patterns of the enemies and find the right timing and way to deal with each enemy. This changes with your gear since some weapons allow you to attack diagonally and you have to consider the right timing to launch that spell you've been saving.

Pros:
-Music, music, MUSIC.
-Fast paced, quick runs
-Graphics are lovely
-Challenging
-Different game modes and co-op

Cons:
-I didn't like the color effect that you get when coin multiplier gets higher,
makes the game look messy particularly in the second zone.
-Not sure if the music/movement calibration is the most accurate possible solution
-If the beat calibration is of it's pretty much impossible to play the hardcore mode
-Could have more items that alter the gameplay

Very good distraction for coffee break gaming and for the laughs with friends.
I felt that the price was a bit high for the game but not for the soundtrack - and this
doesn't mean that the game is bad - just that Danny B makes some badass tunes.

Compared to Bioshock 1 I found that BS2 is a fantastic sequel which fixes all the bad gameplay ideas from the first game and adds it's own flavor to things. The story is deep and twisted and you should play the first game before this to enjoy it to the fullest.

Gameplay: Moving/shooting is solid and weapons really do damage unlike in BS1. You have a lot of choices with weapon upgrades and plasmids (sort of magic in BS-world) and you can make your own "character build" to some extent. You can use different approaches when it comes to encountering enemies i.e. hacking security cams to make the enemies trigger the alerts instead of you, shooting through the corridors or confusing your enemies to fight each other with plasmids.

Story: Story is dark and gritty and mostly presented with audio recordings. This isn't necessarily the best way to tackle the storytelling but you will be rewarded with a lush backstory if you have the patience to listen.

Summary

Pros:
-Graphix still pretty
-Improved gun-/plasmidplay
-Story
-Atmosphere
-All the different options and upgrades

Cons:
-Story told mostly by audio recordings
-No one plays the multiplayer anymore
-I encountered some serious crashing during two last levels and lost 3 hours
worth of progress. Because of this I encourage everyone to quicksave/save
constantly to avoid such thing. Too bad they won't probably be fixing this major
problem anymore...

Overral a brilliant game that suffers some serious bugs (later in the game for me).
