A great game that delivers old school vibes (snes) in modern clothing (qol). Played through the game on hard difficulty and it felt a bit rough early on, but just right at around act 3+ (hard lets you get all achieves in one playthrough).

I enjoyed the story quite a bit, and it managed to tie all the knots at the end (at least for the perfect ending). The game would have been better if it had dropped the attempts at sexual humor, but I feel like thats an issue with many asian stories in general. If you enjoyed the story in snes games like Soul Blazer and Gaia, this one will most likely satisfy you, but dont expect it to rival a Brandon Sanderson novel.

Exploration felt rewarding (even though the game is quite linear) and the combat kept me entertained. Some puzzles actually require thinking and/or exploration to solve.

Grinding was never required for progress, but I enjoyed the hunt for gear and power. Endgame left me with around 5-10 hours of grind to max out everything (nowhere near stat-maxed, but got all achieves and the perfect ending).

All in all, I enjoyed the game more than the quality of its parts. I look forward to the upcoming DLC.

If you are on the fence I recommend downloading the demo (start a new game, dont bother with the "demo" imo) it contains about 3-4 hours of playtime and progress carries over to the full game.

Review @ 22 Hours Played:

This is the best turn-based rpg Ive played in years!

The exploration is great and satisfying (full of "secrets" to uncover), gives me Alundra / Illusion of Gaia vibes.
The combat is absolutely fantastic. It is fast paced, strategic and gives you access to all the info you need to make the correct decisions. Enemies keep you on your toes without being bloated HP-soakers. Using the right tactic can be the difference between dying or cleaning a pack of mobs without even taking dmg. There are several ways to build your team that works out well. So dont be afraid to experiment with different classes and gear setups. The combat mechanics manages to be deep while at the same time being easy to understand.

There are no random encounters, but some areas makes it close to impossible to dodge them (just pointing out that you can avoid most battles if you so desire).

I would reccommend going in without reading guides, as nothing is missable and you can make changes to everything (char names, stat-growth for min-maxing, char gender (gives minor stat variations)) later on. You can even "delevel" if you want to.

While I personally love everything about the game so far, the game may not be for everyone, as the game is extremely light on story. You will play this game for the exploration and combat, not the story.

Will update review as I get further into the game. :)

EDIT @ 100+ Hours played:

After playing to endgame I still consider this one of the best turn-based rpgs Ive played in years, and the points about the game written above still stands. If anything, the exploration aspect just gets better as you get further. Also, some seemingly difficult optional bosses can be beaten early on if you can think of some clever use of the games mechanics. I like that knowledge can give you big advantages both in exploration and combat if I decide to play a new save (or a NG+ if it gets added down the line).

Note:
I played the game "blind" without checking any guides or similar, and I think this helped a lot in keeping the the exploration exciting and added a layer of mystery to the game as a whole.

The gameplay is what you would expect from a dungeon crawler, with visible encounters in the form of black numbers and events in the form of white numbers. Battles are relatively fast paced.

Fully supports playing the with gamepad, keyboard OR mouse (click-to-move), rebinding of all keys on controller and keyboard and seamless switching between input methods ingame.

The only story so far worth mentioning is the character descriptions ingame.

Shop items are unlocked by defeating specific monsters that also have a chance to drop said item.

I would recommend it for those that enjoy games like Etrian Odyssey, but do note that there is much less customization options and basicly no story.

Will update review at a later date when Ive played more.

UPDATE:
Basicly nothing more of note to add, except that the design of a few of the last floors was not to my liking ("postgame" in usual jrpg-settings) and there is a tiny bit of story at the later floors. I still enjoyed the game as a whole.

This earlier Switch title suddenly dropped on steam without my prior knowledge. So I do think they both could and should have made a bit bigger splash to get some attention for the release.

The short version of my experience with the game is as follows:

Its a modern take on the classic job-system jrpgs (think ff5).

The port ran perfect for me, no problems from start to finish, no console fps cap.
Story is pretty mediocre, nothing special here.
Gameplay was good enough to keep me interested until the end.
Dungeons are usually short and sweet, with unlockable shortcut-teleporters.
Grinding was never needed on my part, until I was trying to complete the equipment-guide.
Difficulty is more about finding the right job-combinations than stat-checks.
Endgame was relatively easy, and can be completely crushed with some of the most powerful combinations.

Bought it full-price and tbh I got my value out of it.

If you did not play Siralim 1:
There is absolutely no issue starting with the sequel in this series, you will not miss out on anything in the second game by doing so.

Siralim 2 is a game that lets you build a team of creatures and has many similarities with the old Dragon Warrior Monsters games. It does however offer much more complexity and customization when it comes to team composition than those older titles.

Battles are turnbased and require you to think about what to do depending on what enemy creatures you face (their info is available by using inspect during battle, which does not consume a turn). Although enemies also have hidden bonuses, like stats and effects from artifacts they have equipped, making them less predictable and more varied.

The story is there, but it is not the main focus of the game. It works as both a tutorial of sorts through the game and includes unique boss encounters at certain floors.

Both spells (in the form of gems you can equip and de-equip form your creatures at will between battles) and attacks are viable options, although the gems you obtain from loot is random, so you might get lucky/unlucky.

If you played Siralim 1:
You can now adjust volume ingame (yey!). Seriously though, its better in every aspect, and if you liked the first one, you will love the sequel. If you did not enjoy the first game, you might still enjoy the sequel if the problems you had with the first game has been fixed by:
There is now floating combat text as opposed to everything being told through scrolling text at the top of the screen in the first game.
Enemies no longer level up with you, so the difficulty of a certain floor is always the same.

End notes:
Remember that the game is still in early access for bug-squishing and balance-tweaking. As of writing this review most of the discovered gamebreaking bugs/crashes have already been fixed, so expect them to be few and far between in a couple of days (after this was written).

This game really bring back memories from the old dragon quest monsters series. If you enjoy turn based games with a flavour of catch'em'all, this is heartily recommended.

A warning though, there is not much story to be found in this game, but if you put emphasis on gameplay / party planning in these kind of games you should be more than satisfied. :)

A quick summary of my thoughts on the game:
An adventure game with an interresting way of telling the story through pictures (thought / speech bubbles) in stead of text. I found the characters and situations you encounter to be quite funny. The puzzles are nicely varied, although some of them are a bit tedious (those that arent really puzzles at all!). Item combining usually made sense the few times it was needed. Game is about the expected length (short), but the prize tag makes it worthwhile in my opinion.

This is an adventure game that you may enjoy even if you arent a die hard adventure game enthusiast.
Id also recommend it if you are looking for a casual experience to share with your better half.
