Ties That Bind Parts 1 & 2 bring us the shambling beginnings of a new story arc with a fresh set of characters and conflicts brewing. There are sparks of potential, but the series must overcome its own tendency to lean on fan favorite characters to tell a new story worth remembering.

Some games tell unique and inventive stories about memorable characters. Some games challenge the player’s skills and intelligence. Some games are fun to play and visually pleasing.

De-Void, the newest release from indie studio Pulsetense Games, is none of those things.

Instead, it takes a mishmash of memorable elements from other pop culture properties and Frankensteins them together with clunky design to create a tepid lump you’ll forget about within minutes of slogging through the two-hour experience.

Firebird: La Péri, developed by fledgling company Innerspace VR, isn’t really a game. It isn’t really a movie either, or a dance, or a play. It could best be described as an art piece that combines elements of ballet, theater and fairytales, and uses Virtual Reality to showcase its glittering, gliding vision. If you’re a fine-art fanatic who also happens to own an HTC Vive, you’ll probably delight in Firebird: La Péri. But that’s a niche sector of the market.

Whether Virtual Reality gaming will develop permanent and lasting popularity as a medium remains to be seen, but there’s no question that it’s the trend of the moment, drawing many developers to test the capacities of the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. The results in many cases are only sometimes functional and rarely fun.

One such new title is Vacate the Room, developed by one-man operation Heiko Ihde. The game takes its inspiration from other games in the Escape-the-Room genre, wherein the player is in a locked room with perhaps two sentences of character motivation and no other imperative than to find a way out. The genre saw immense popularity online in the mid-2000s when Flash games were a free and addictive distraction, and the runaway success of Crimson Room in 2004 spawned a host of imitators like Murder Escape, Guest House, and Mystery of Time and Space.

So how has the genre improved in the intervening decade? Not much, if you use Vacate the Room as a bellwether for progress. The game lacks many sophisticated puzzles and is fraught with technical quirks. It plays like a tech demo, the existence of which offers a vague promise of what could be possible when talented storytellers, artists, and developers team up to create quality VR content in the Escape-the-Room vein.

Crystal Rift, developed by Psytec Games, is the product of a gaming culture so obsessed with new technological developments that it is willing to disregard all the elements that make a good game in service of cutting-edge platforms. Created for virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift and funded by a Kickstarter, the game is a loveless marriage between “retro” graphics (aka “hasn’t been impressive since Doom was released”) and a limp, outmoded play style that combine to make something so unfun it feels outlandish to call it a game.

Explorations of mental health have seen a recent renaissance in video games, and these representations fall on a spectrum of sensitivity when it comes to complex real-world issues and conditions. The most insensitive are games like Silent Hill or Far Cry 3 that use mental illness as a catchall motivation for the villain’s bad behavior. The best are titles like Depression Quest that further understanding of mental disorders for people who don’t have them and encourage more sensitive, nuanced discussion.

Italian developer LKA’s first game, The Town of Light, falls toward the less progressive end of the spectrum. In addition to relying upon surface examinations of mental illness, the studio has put most of its energy toward recreating the dimensions and architecture of a real-life Italian mental institution, Ospedale Psichiatrico di Volterra, and in doing so has sacrificed good gameplay and effective storytelling for the sake of slick graphics. The game is unpleasant to play, is poorly paced, and ultimately reads like a dated examination of a mental health issue.

The series’ port from paper to pixels by Inkle Studios (which originally occurred in 2014, when Sorcery! first debuted for iOS and Android devices) is largely a success. A slow start gives way to an immersive story that’s supplemented by intuitive gameplay and a simple but attractive art style, which makes this a game worth grabbing for anyone who loves fantasy or tabletop RPGs.

French publisher Microïds, perhaps best known for character-driven adventures such as Syberia and Still Life, has used its talents this time to conjure up a familiar face. Agatha Christie: The ABC Murders adapts the exploits of Hercule Poirot, Christie’s infamously eccentric Belgian sleuth known best for his adventures on the Orient Express and the Nile. The resulting game is slow and methodical, but ultimately a faithful portrayal of a much-beloved character.

Any horror-loving PC gamer who devoured Amnesia: The Dark Descent should be excited about SOMA. Frictional Games, which is renowned for its immersive and chilling titles, has created a game that mixes a strong dose of the perfectly calculated ambient terror of Amnesia with weighty questions about the nature of existence and what it means to be alive. The result is a game with staying power, both in the nightmares it will cause and the lingering questions it demands players to confront.
