Her Story, created and released by Sam Barlow of Silent Hill fame, is one of those games that often has critics questioning whether it should be called a “game” at all. It’s closer, perhaps, to a visual novel or a movie viewed out of sequence. Whatever you call it, it’s an enjoyable, compact experience that probably won’t have you lying awake thinking about it weeks later but tells an engaging story in an unexpected way.

I had high hopes for Kholat, the debut title from Polish company IMGN.PRO. The trailer promised a horror-filled trek through the Ural Mountains, seeking out the truth behind a mysterious (and historical!) tragedy, all while being serenaded by the narration of prodigious actor Sean Bean. What I got was something a little more piecemeal; jawdropping visuals and a high-concept story weren’t enough to save gameplay issues from making the experience largely frustrating and confounding.

The Charnel House Trilogy is a slight, lukewarm horror game that will provide a pleasing distraction for hardcore horror fans but probably won’t satisfy the casual gamer.

Croatian developers Croteam (known for the Serious Sam series) have thrown their hats in the ring with The Talos Principle, a sprawling puzzle game/philosophical adventure that pairs questions of consciousness and existence with logic challenges for an experience that is pleasant and engaging but could feel dull in the wrong player’s hands.

The remaster does everything right, preserving what made the original so memorable while polishing up a few worn spots and porting the game to new platforms so that it can get the wider audience it deserves. Nothing on Earth or the Eighth Underworld is perfect, but Grim Fandango Remastered comes pretty damn close.

Corto Maltese: Secrets of Venice is Kids up hill’s newest adventure game that draws inspiration from the seafaring comic book character of the same name. Sadly, strong source material isn’t enough to buoy a clunky, slapdash failure of a game from crashing and burning on impact. Secrets of Venice is mostly insulting in its banality and occasionally frustratingly obtuse, and the result is a gameplay experience that is deeply "unfun."

Five Nights at Freddy’s is scary. Startling, creepy, cry-out-in-the-night scary. But is it horror? That’s far less certain. Developed by Scott Cawthon, the game is a fleeting adrenaline rush with a great premise and gameplay that starts strong but fades fast.

Firewatch is an unexpected wonder and one of the only games I've ever given an A+. Full review here:
