just one more turn...
Actually one of the best turn based games I've played... Of course, Heroes 3 is better IMO but that's a different game with a different playstyle.

One of the better civilization games overall, although the modding scene is rather underwhelming compared to a game like Civilization 4 (e.g. Middle Earth mod for Civ IV vs LOTR scenario for Civ V). You can find mods on the civfanatics forums or on moddb or nexusmods (or on the steam workshop).

If you're looking for other Civ games aside from Civ V:
You can't really go wrong with Civ IV: Beyond the Sword. It has a good variety of mods, notably the Fall from Heaven mod.
Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire (Alpha Centauri expansion) has rather janky controls and is less forgiving compared to the more recent Civ games but it's a very solid space-themed Civilization game. It has some community patches (Both Scient's patch and Yitzi's patch are recommended) and a graphical mod (PRACX) that allows higher resolutions for modern systems.
Civ III is also good but it's a bit outdated, it has a few bugs, and the AI is kind of meh.

One issue I have with Civ 5 is that the combat is slow, and some animations (such as the aeroplane animations) take too long. Other games, such as Alpha Centauri, have much quicker combat with stacked units.

I've had weird issues playing with mods in hotseat or multiplayer mode in Civ 5. You have to go to a separate menu to play with steam workshop mods otherwise they don't work. Perhaps there is a workaround for this?

The DLCs can be kind of meh. One of the DLCs makes the music sound pretty average. The gameplay changes from the mods are up to personal preference. You can disable the DLCs if you wish so it's not a huge problem, and there are a number of mods out there for civilization 5 such as "music overhaul".

PSA: Wallpaper may use increased CPU and GPU power, but it’s for a good cause! Wallpaper engine, if you use the right settings, can prevent your GPU from idling and so increases performance as your computer does not waste time waiting for the GPU to clock up. From my testing, running the demon core wallpaper at max settings then decreasing FPS until just before the point clocks drop to idle in MSI Afterburner works well - I only need to run the wallpaper at 1440p 15FPS to go from a 139MHz idle to a reasonably stable ~600Mhz clock on my GTX 1050. As a result, the computer becomes more snappy. I’ve noticed that, on Intel GPUs, if you set it up to run the wallpaper engine in the background while gaming and on full screen apps, videos and games stutter much less and perform more consistently even though average FPS may be lower. I’m not sure why but my guess it’s got to do with power saving features on Intel and running two 3D applications at the same time circumvents that somehow. Speaking of which, on Intel laptops you can adjust settings so that maximum performance is used in windows power settings, and that High Performance dedicated GPU is used in Windows Graphics Settings (very useful setting).

Wallpaper brings even more benefits to a wide variety of use cases. Wallpaper Engine (assuming you use the right wallpapers) is really good if you use an OLED Panel. It basically eliminates the chance of burn-in that you'd get with a static wallpaper.

If you use an OLED panel, other things I'd suggest doing to enhance your OLED experience include: auto-hiding the taskbar, removing icons from your desktop (if you can't remove them, move them to a different non-OLED monitor), enabling dark mode (the darker the content on your screen the better, also uses less power consumption), using a dark wallpaper, minimizing windows when you're not using them (or switching between virtual desktops), and enabling screensaver (in case any windows pop up).

Other alternatives you can use instead of wallpaper engine include slideshow wallpapers (e.g. playing your photo album) but that doesn't have the cool-factor of wallpaper engine. If you look up wallpaper engine alternatives on google you can find some other ways to achieve dynamic wallpapers.
There are wallpaper engine alternatives for mac and linux, there are plenty of apps on the app store such as Mach wallpaper or Dynamic Wallpaper Engine, but they aren't as good as wallpaper engine as of writing this. Wallpaper engine excels in its 3D wallpapers, but if you only care about 2D video wallpapers the wallpaper engine alternatives will probably meet your requirements.

NOTE: REVIEW IS OUTDATED, the software has changed significantly since this review.
Excellent software, at $4 it's a steal
Pros:
-Decent selection of stock animated and 3D wallpapers
-Lots of good community wallpapers on the workshop and online
-Supports a wide variety of formats
-3D wallpapers
-Low CPU usage, the default stock wallpapers look great and somehow use very little processing power.
-Looping of gifs and videos

Cons (most of these are outdated):
-Does not scale gifs
-Why do I have to select "All Documents" in order to select gifs? "All supported files" should include gifs as well
-scaling causes cropping, needs different scaling options such as fit to screen
-sometimes freezes for a short period of time when switching between wallpapers, especially when switching to the "sheep" wallpaper (most likely due to the use of unity engine).
-Anime was a mistake - Hayao Miyazaki
-Workshop is flooded with non-english wallpapers (chinese) and it's hard to tell if they are quality or not until you download them and realise they aren't that great.

This is exactly how an indie game should be made, unlike games such as No Man's Sky
A fun and unique game with a nice art style and cool story.

Still waiting for half life 3
8/10

See my Half Life 1 review for more details. Anyway, I just wanted to say that the first third of HL2 felt a lot like a tech demo and spent more time 'teaching' the player how to play the game than actually playing it, but the latter two thirds impressed me with the large amount of variety. The biggest issue with this game is that the levels are inconsistent in terms of quality - some are small and linear while others show moments of brilliance. Even then though, the linear levels are still pretty fun, and the linearity allows for cool scripted events that otherwise wouldn't be possible with a larger level. Overall, HL2 is a pretty fun game and it is very much action packed.

There are a few settings I recommend for HL2:
1. Disable v-sync. I've found that the game stutters with v-sync on if you are running at max settings. Even if you do turn down the settings I wouldn't recommend using v-sync because it results in very noticeable mouse lag on a 60hz monitor.
2. The game runs at a very high framerate (300fps) when you turn v-sync off. Unfortunately this results in a lot of tearing. If you are running a 60hz display I would suggest using rivatuner (this is usually bundled with MSI afterburner) to limit fps of HL2.exe to 120fps - this reduces screen tearing.
If you are running a high refresh rate monitor, this is less of an issue. Actually, you probably would be fine if you turned on v-sync for a 120hz display

Alternatively, you can disable framerate limit (set it to 0) and try running scanline sync x2 and set the number to something like -1000 (on a 4k monitor) so there is one tear line underneath the crosshair and another above it (you don't want the tear line to be on the middle, ideally it's better to have the tear line on the top as high up as possible while keeping the bottom tear line below the crosshair) - to see the tear lines, move your mouse side to side horizontally while looking at a large vertical object (such as a corner of a building or a trea) - then alt+tab out of the game and adjust the scanline sync numbers - you will see the tear lines move up or down. I think scanline sync looks a bit better otherwise the tear line moves all over the place when using regular framerate limiter. This depends somewhat on your GPU load, if you find that your GPU is struggling to output 120fps, then you can use scanline sync (not x2) to get better results.
