I didn't really have any expectations, but this game is frustratingly buggy and needlessly complicated. Even just a few hours in I had several soft locks due to scripting glitches. On top of that, the UX is so insanely bad that nothing in the game feels natural. Like, the game has four different keys for exiting screens. The game is just constantly forcing you to focus your attention on all of these convoluted inconsistencies instead of allowing you to focus on the gameplay. It's a cool setting and all, but it needs some serious quality fixes to be playable.

Hocus Pocus meets Super Meat Boy. Great high-precision platforming with really tight controls. The music, aesthetics and level themes are phenomenal too. Pretty stellar game.

The amount of work that has gone into this is insane. Also, it's exactly what it looks like. What you see in the trailer is what you'll get, so if that's your thing then this is a must-buy.

A modern release of an old MS-DOS classic. It's a pretty rudimentary platformer, but a really fun blast from the past.

DON'T BUY IT YET - DOESN'T FUNCTION AS ADVERTISED

Reasons:

  • Lacks explicit HTML5-exporter. The advertising says that you can export to HTML5, but there's no explicit option to do so.
  • Windows builds use node-webkit as a wrapper, but don't package/archive the resources like other HTML5 game design toolkits do. Instead it just leaves the assets out in the open.
  • Android-exporter just exports a HTML-file (with resources) - it doesn't actually package an APK. Other HTML5 toolkits take care of this for you, but RPG Maker MV doesn't.
  • iOS-exporter just exports a HTML-file (with resources) - it doesn't actually package an IPA. Other HTML5 toolkits take care of this for you, but RPG Maker MV doesn't.
  • No fullscreen - just maximizes window. Previous versions allowed you to boot the game in fullscreen by default, but this one doesn't. You have let the user know that they need to press F4.
  • Windowed mode has letterbox. In other words, there are two black bars in windowed mode, instead of the window snapping to the game's viewport.
  • Title screen has no quit option on Windows- and Mac builds. Users need to ALT+F4 in order to quit.
  • Most of the assets are RMVX-defaults or based on RMVX-defaults.

Wait until they fix these issues.

EDIT: Clarified some of the points.

Edit 2: Steam finally reviewed and rejected Portalarium's complaint about this review.

Edit: Moments after writing this review I was banned everywhere on Portalarium (including the development and feedback forum that I paid to be a part of), and they flagged the review as "breaking the community guidelines" even though it doesn't break any rules on Steam. I hadn't interacted with Portalarium for weeks prior to getting banned and the ban occurred in conjunction with the review getting flagged, so it's quite obvious that they banned me only because I wrote a negative review. It's one of the most petty and unprofessional things I've seen a game developer do.

Being a big fan of Richard Garriott I donated $850 to the developers, joined the community and was instantly met with a toxic, nitpicky and sometimes hateful environment - including the staff. I brought this up with the community manager and was almost immediately banned. After e-mailing a producer he apologized and unbanned me, but at the same time told me that he couldn't tell me why all of this occured in order to - and I quote - "protect the staff."

The game's community and its management also seemed to be strangely apologetic and protective of Christianity. At certain points I was warned (and at some point banned) for "taking the lord's name in vain". Meanwhile I saw people being overly sexist, racist or generally horrible which for some reason seemed to go unnoticed.

I've seen people there complaining about abuse and fascist undertones in the staff and management. I eventually decided to bow out of the game and its community, effectively regretting ever giving them any money to begin with.

All I can say is that I got some really weird and scary impressions, and it seems to be a problem that starts with the management and ends with the common users. The whole thing felt unprofessional and cult-like.

I'd advise everyone to stay away.

Already played through the game but bought it again on Steam to support the devs. This game is so good. It's so insanely good. It is SO GOOD.
