This is honestly what I expected the X-Com remake to be, and was disappointed that I didn't get. It's a tasteful homage to the originals, with an art direction all its own. The developers have obviously put a lot of thought into making a beautiful and fun game. I like it a lot 11 hours in, and I can see myself sinking 40 more into it.

"Meh" things:
The combat is a bit simpler than I like in my TBS games. I feel like they could have worked in more complexity to movement/posture/aiming (like JA2 did), and come out with a more engaging, tactical game. However, it's still a step up from the remade X-Com, so I won't nitpick here too much.

The maps feel a bit same-y after a few battles (crashed spaceships are generally in the same location relative to your skyranger).

Don't be dissuaded, though - this is good stuff. 7/10 or so.

Think of all the games in your steam library. Chances are, you've put more than half an hour into a lot of them.
Go put another half hour or so onto them. Don't put a half hour into Fingerbones.

Yes, it does build up an eerie atmosphere (good background music), but hardly enough to keep the player interested. Sure, the notes are unsettling, but the story they tell is hardly original, and the supposed "trigger warning" needed is just a buzzword grab for attention. For such a short 'game' trying to be impactful, it pulls a lot of punches it didn't need to.

Furthermore, retrieving passwords and backtracking to the keyboard is tedious, and takes up a fair portion of the ~20mins you'll spend playing this. Were the environment more pleasant to look at or more artistically interesting, I wouldn't have minded. Alas, this was not the case.

For a similar experience to Fingerbones, load up the old Windows 99 "Maze" screensaver and read creepypasta until you lose interest.

It's an alright game, if you don't go into it with hopes that are too high. On the good side, it's a fairly tasteful homage to Lovecraftian horror and it doesn't use cheap jump-scares to build tension.

...on the bad side, it doesn't build up too much tension at all. The soundtrack and sound effects are pretty good, but highlighting documents and reading books are only tense for so long. A few of the puzzles also depend on recalling specific details, and the document-reading system gets a tad frustrating at times. If you (as the player) have figured out what to do next, you won't be able to do it until you (as a character) have strung together the correct sequence of thoughts. :/ The ending is also underwhelming.

All in all, if you want a slightly sp00ky puzzle game (but not a horror game) to play for a few hours, get this, but only if it's on sale.
