Long time sonic fan that has been waiting many years for a remotely enjoyable (or even playable) addition to the franchise. Yes, it lacks polish, and yes there are some choppy cutscenes, and the ending wrapped up way too fast. However, given their severe lack of budget on this one, this is a proper triumph.

The movement mechanics are relatively smooth, the open world is packed with elaborate and entertaining platforming segments, the world bosses were REALLY creative and interesting. The skill tree system seemed a little haphazard, but didn't detract from the overall experience. While I did enjoy the open world aspects, I'm a big fan of classic course clear, and the idea to require the shorter course clear levels as a means to progress in the overworld was a really good idea.

The absolute best part of this game is the soundtrack. I'm a sonic fanboy because of that butt-rock and the electronica, and this time they brought the metal and the dubstep and it is stupid good. While the supersonic segments were particularly janky control-wise (as they always are), they were unreasonably cinematic and the music just made you headbang while trying not to die. The course clear levels EACH have a custom banger made by the legend Tomoya Ohtani who brought his absolute A-game on this.

If you missed the old SA2 days, this one will scratch the itch. Looking forward to a sequel.
