It is good.

I do not regret the 500+ hours I spent in this universe.

Even though I died occasionally.

I have been lyrical about Subset games' previous title (FTL: Faster than Light) since its release in 2012. I have put off playing this second game for 4 years, because I assumed it could only be dissapointing compared to my favorite game of all time.

It is not.

Into the Breach is a neat little combat-puzzler, where the enemy has a numerical advantage over you, but is is slow to react to your movements and not as clever as you are. The main goal of this masterpiece is not merely to attack your enemies in a straightforward way, but rather to use them against each other. Every turn is akin to one of those chess puzzles you sometimes get, but with far greater variety, creativity and satisfiying audiovisuals. The feeling you get when you make your way out of what seemed like a no-win scenario is pure cocaine. Occasionally, the game forces you into a corner, where you have to make difficult moral / gameplay choices: Do you fulfill your mission objectives, or do you forfeit a hefty bonus in order to save a building full of civilians?
The unlock system for new mech teams is extremely well executed: You need to gather achievements in order to unlock new teams: Many of these achievements will nudge you into learning the strategies and creative ways in which you can use your new teams. Having to start with a new team after you unlock one you are intimately familiar with feels deeply engaging: New mechs always feel like useless, ill-designed tools, vastly inferior to your previous mechs. However, once you take the time to get to know and understand how they play, you will come to master and adore every single mech (except the Pull mech) in your team.

Also, the music by Ben Prunty is once again top tier.

I'll stop fangirling about this now.

Also the time loop aspect of the situation is pretty rad. You never just "start again", but you "abandon the timeline", which is just an excellent way to get you to keep trying, even when odds are against you. (But that might just be because i'm the softest person on earth)

Okay, now i'll stop gushing.

Go buy it. (and if you have extra time, bother Subset games about creating a mobile version)
