Apart from some odd crashes, (like at the threatre, which for some reason only stopped crashing once I stopped walking into the black void) "The Beginner's Guide" is a genuinely humbling, beautiful and thoughtful package, with a great yet saddening story. It really made me think all those years ago when I first heard and saw it about how one makes (or technically not here?) a video game.

For a game that sounds on the surface so pretentious, the gameplay itself is everything but that. There is no gameplay though. You walk, you click, and that's it. The story being told here is of two friends growing apart before one decisive decision results in the total end of their friendship, and the story being told here is immaculate.

There is no "end" either, rather the epilogue is cryptic and vague and a player may be driven to think that this wasn't by an alleged "Coda" at all (some even say Coda is entirely fake but I disagree) but rather by Davey. Whether or not it's based 100% off a true story or 100% false is up for you to decide once playing, but "The Beginner's Guide" is a genuinely fascinating game, not perfect by any means but a game where the imperfections are the reason it's so good.

Go in with an open mind, let your imagination wonder (the game itself tells you that this is just one interpretation) and don't watch any playthroughs. This game wants to soak you in the story - let it. You'll be thinking about this game for a long, long time.
