Slightly easier, less grindy, SF version of Darkest Dungeon. Late game can be pretty broken with the right crew setup (Bruiser with Wild Pummeling, Lethality % stacks and Elemental Amp for ex) but can still be challenging with RNG. I honestly like this a lot better than Darkest Dungeon - it's more fun and the writing is arguably better and less cheesy. DLCs added a decent amount of variety to the game. Give it a look if you like strategy / RPG games!

Fun take on the old formula. Definitely shorter but more engaging - lots of thought was put into each individual character's skills so that you had actual classes instead of just tanky rangers rapid shotting enemies to death all around the map.

Fun came from figuring out synergies which are pretty classic formations - tank plus support plus crowd control or glass cannon plus mobility support plus healer plus crowd control or etc. Maps were small and contained which keeps things short and engaging while still requiring a lot of planning ahead of time.

The new Breach aspect added a lot, too - balancing immediate penalties to your health with mitigating future attacks or buffs. Definitely took some getting used to but you hit your stride midgame.

Not a huge fan of gatekeeping characters for 'playability' purposes. You unlock characters throughout the game but there's maybe three or four you never end up being able to recruit - each a unique class or an alternate take on an existing class.

The writing is also pretty Whedonesque - which is cute, in a way, but super tropey. The people who play this game will probably like it a lot because it is that nerdy fanbase. I'm not as big of a fan but it's just a matter of taste.

Overall, really enjoyed the hell out of this game. Not as replayable as the original XCOMs but I'm okay with that - you gotta do something other than video games, after all. Worth the money.

Bad dialogue, plot is very derivative, and the lead narrator is about 20 years too young to be dungeon mastering this game. Also having the culture derived from East Asian influences be the slave-owning, imperialistic traitors instead of the white, Western influenced cultures seems a bit... revisionist.
