Early Access Review
I bought Caves of Qud because I was tired of waiting for a proper Dwarf Fortress adventure mode with graphics I could understand. That's finally arrived, but Caves of Qud has set the gold-standard for how a modern roguelike interface should look. I play the game entirely on my Steam Deck and the experience of not having a mouse has not been diminished one bit. Absolutely stellar experience and the game I played most in 2023.

This game gets a lot of comparisons to the Dark Souls series due to the use of checkpoints for travel and the dodge and roll mechanics—but I would argue this game is more like an apocalyptic Left 4 Dead. Weapons can be augmented with abilities you craft from boss drops and the exploration mechanic of salvaging while exploring reminds me of what appeals about exploration in Fallout.

I play mostly solo and have a fun time, but the game is better with friends.

Don't bother. It's a piece of ♥♥♥♥ game that deserves to fail.

An amazing strategy RPG in the same vein as Fallout 1 & 2 and Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. If you like party-based RPGs with turn-based combat, this game is a modern re-imaginging of everything that made those games great. The story can be completed in multiple ways, so you don't have to worry about pigeon-holing yourself because you happened to get pissed at one NPC and murdered their whole family violently in a fit of rage.

Perhaps the best part of the whole combat is that elements come into play with status effects like warm, wet, chilled, etc. When your character is effected by these, you can use the elements to your advantage. For example, if you have a group of enemies standing in a low-lying spot, you can have a Hydrosophist in your party use the rain spell to cause a puddle of water to appear underneath them, then use the lightning bolt spell on the puddle to stun everyone standing in the puddle. Elemental combinations like this make the battlefield an amazingly fun place to be.

Pick this game up, you won't regret it. Larian has done an amazing job on creating this experience with the help of Kickstarter and it has very few problems thanks to that extended beta test, unlike their previous releases.

Perfect mix of roguelike combat with RPG customization when it comes to items and skills. Each class has an origin story and you unlock further classes in the game as you encounter various events in the world. It's a bit different than traditional roguelikes as you're not descening one specific dungeon for a huge number of levels, but rather you play on an overworld map that has hundreds of different areas to explore.

Definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a turn-based experience custom-tailored to your preferences.
