This game harkens back to when I first started playing RoN with friends back in college (in the old GameSpy era of multiplayer). There is something imensely satisfying about a game that combines the tacitcal and strategic scope of play like Rise does, especially when tied to a tech tree that takes you all the way from the Ancient Age to the Information Age. When Extended Edition came out, we all abandoned our vintage patched installations of the original and migrated to the re-released version with more robust multiplayer. Co-op vs the AI is still a staple in our gaming rotation, giving us a virtual gaming table to gather round despite living in different states. A hearty dose of nostalgia, but also a game that still stands on its solid foundation more than a decade after the original release.

This game helped me deal with growing impatients in the lead up to the start of a new GoT season. I would not say it helped with my anxiousness, as it perfectly captures the constantly building tension of the GoT world, while remaining true to its "grim-dark" aesthetic. You are constantly faced with a set of sub-optimal options to choose between and no matter how much you believe you have made the best of the choices presented to you, chances are it is not going to yield a happy ending.
