Tons of content already in the form of challenges, characters and loop.

I want so bad to like this entry. I really do.
But every single time I find a positive, I can find a glaring negative.

Combat pacing being the most glaring of all.
It's pacing falls apart entirely when dealing with multiple virals at the same time.
I understand that these are supposed to be dangerous situations but being stun locked by multiple jumping virals or being pinned down by a stronger mutant and being constantly beaten to death with no answer other than waiting for an animation to end is, to say the least, rage quit worthy.

I've said it for years and I'll say it again here, any mechanic that takes control and agency away from a player in order to punish them or for "gaME BAlAncE" is a sin in game design.


The story is there.
Like, I literally don't care for it at all and thankfully we can just straight up skip entire scenes.

The Parkour feels great at first but the more you get into the weeds with it, you find yourself frustrated falling, over jumping, over correcting and just not having the ability yet for arbitrary reasons to get somewhere, stamina being the most damning system preventing flow state and fun.

Items breaking is nothing but a padding in game structure. Needing to mod them constantly to repair ones you like is not intuitive.

The games systems, objective, side quests, mechanics and menus are honestly just overwhelming and you'll forget most of it if you leave and then return later. This is one of the few cases I'd call "too much of a good thing" true.

Dying Light 2 is a game that does everything it can to be played as little as possible while playing it thanks to it's menus, sub menus, maps, journal, objectives and crafting systems.
And I'm saying that as a fan of Garage menu minmax simulators like Forza Horizon and Armored Core.

Raiden is a series that is without a doubt a classic. However it refuses to evolve in a way that makes it fun for even fans of the genre.

The most relaxing and uncomfortable fishing adventure~

Showing it's hand up front only works in Dredges favor as it knows that you know something isn't right going in.
It uses this to intentionally put you in positions you'd rather not be in and leaving you unsure of what's around the next bend or what uncomfortable task it's going to ask next of you.

It's loop is nothing short of addictive with often 3-4 somethings occupying space in your mind at once without feeling like a rush all the while subtly pointing you back toward that discomfort zone for the sake of progress. It doesn't feel forced mind you, but you know you can't stay at the shores you've grown to know and have to move on to get anything done.

It is cozy, peaceful and unnerving.

The Lost World: Jurassic Forest
I mean this entirely as a complement.

Does it have anything to do with Dinos? No.
It is however aware that it played it's hand the first time around, you know what you're getting, it knows you know what you're getting and, much like the films that inspired the first, it leans into the B list sequels that tend to follow.
It still follows the formula that made the Forest what it was, while also accepting a slightly different tone of both horror and action.
Normal moments you are familiar with such as defending your home are now elevated with the roar of a shotgun accompanied by the thumping of a boombox being carried by a deaf man.

Don't get me wrong, it's still ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up, twisted and has moments of dread. But doesn't take itself entirely seriously when you realize the elements that have been sprinkled here and there and how they change the tone ever so slightly, imo, in a nice direction to separate itself from the first game.

It's EA with 6-8 months of planned tweaking, development and bi weekly updates.
The price isn't planned to change either.

So if you're on the fence, totally fair and maybe smart to wait and see how it pans out.

Me personally, while it is clearly missing some things currently, I adore it already and am excited to see what they have planned soon.

"Souls with Guns" is such an injustice to this gem and is related to that label on the surface alone.
Truth be told, I hadn't played it up until now due to this description as that doesn't feel like something I'd like, even as a huge fan of Fromsoft games.
And in the end, I'm glad it's not.
A Boss room and check point system does not make a Souls game. If that were actually the case, then MegaManX or any Igavania is a Soulslike...

"ARPG with firearms" is far more accurate as there's a major focus on replayability, co-op play and unique builds with traits and abilities that rely on player creativity to come to life when combined with each other.
The RPG elements within are pretty nice and are already affording me some really fun and creative combinations that let my play style shine rather than hold me back.
Think Outriders sans the looter shooter angle and a more deliberate pacing...
Imagine the Tide games without the hoards...
You get the idea.

Ultimately, it takes elements from various other genres and long established games and blends them into it's own unique dungeon crawling brand of action.

Stay back until they fix it and there's more.
The game is FUN when it runs well and if you like it, enjoy by all means.
But the performance got worse somehow on release, little content changed from pre release to full release and there's a day one cash shop.

I went from having withdrawals during the server down time to actually not wanting to play on release day.

WTF Fatshark.

I played the demo for nearly 6 hours straight.
I'm scared of the main game even in early access.
Just leaving this to boost the ratings because it deserve it. There's a million things I could say but I'd rather be playing.
