Civilization VII Review – A Step Forward or a Step Back?

I've been playing *Civilization* since the first game on my Amiga 500, spending thousands of hours in the series—2,900+ in *Civ 5*, 2,600 in *Civ 6*, and now about 50 hours in *Civ 7*. I completed a full game in *Civ 7*, and while I found it enjoyable, it lacked the depth and excitement that kept me coming back to previous entries. After one playthrough, I felt no real urge to start again.

Era System – Disruptive, Not Engaging
The new Era System, dividing the game into Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern, felt more like three separate games rather than a natural progression. Advancing required predefined objectives that often didn’t fit my strategy, making the experience feel forced. Instead of shaping my own civilization’s story, I was following arbitrary tasks that pulled me out of the immersion.

Diplomacy – A Missed Opportunity
Diplomacy felt lifeless. The new Influence Currency turned negotiations into a static, transactional process with no real sense of evolving relationships. AI leaders didn’t feel dynamic, and decisions rarely had meaningful consequences. Compared to previous entries, diplomacy in *Civ 7* lacked the tension and strategic depth that should make international relations engaging.

AI – A Wasted Opportunity in the Age of LLMs
In an era where LLM-driven AI is transforming gaming, I would have loved to see a more advanced, unpredictable AI that truly challenged the player. A smarter, more adaptive AI could have made diplomacy, warfare, and even city management more engaging. Instead, *Civ 7*'s AI feels rigid and predictable, rarely forcing me to rethink my strategies. A well-implemented adaptive AI could have made each game unique, ensuring no two playthroughs felt the same.

User Interface – Informative but Unclear
The UI is packed with information, but it's often unclear what is interactive and what’s just a static report. Some screens feel cluttered, while others lack basic functionality. There were moments when I wasn’t sure if I was making decisions or just looking at numbers. A more intuitive UI would make managing an empire smoother and more enjoyable.

Customization and Army Leaders – A Glimpse of Potential
One feature I truly enjoyed was the new Army Leader system, which added more personality and depth to warfare. However, I wished for an in-game unit editor, allowing players to customize military units with unique attributes—if I wanted to create a massive, immobile cannon, I should have that freedom. More customization would significantly enhance replayability.

Final Verdict
*Civilization VII* has some interesting ideas but struggles with execution. The era system disrupts pacing, diplomacy feels hollow, and the UI needs refinement. While the Army Leader mechanic is a welcome addition, the AI feels outdated, missing a huge opportunity to push the series forward.

That said, I still want to give it a thumbs-up—not because I think it's a great game right now, but because I’ve spent a lot of money on it and believe it has potential with major improvements. I’m writing this review in the hope that the developers see it and make the necessary changes. *Civilization* is a legendary series, and I’d love for *Civ 7* to become the game it deserves to be.
