This game's core combat loop is nearly perfect, in some ways even better than Eternal's. Unfortunately almost everything else is a step back from the previous two games in the nu-Doom series.

My main issue with this game is the cinematic approach of the cutscenes. I loved 2016's first-person environmental storytelling, and Eternal's larger-than-life presentation. I *do* care about the side characters and lore of the Doom series, but this game felt like it focused on worldbuilding a bit too much and took too much focus away from the Slayer. I think it's important to respect games as their own medium with their own storytelling devices, instead of trying to make them more like movies.

I can still commend idSoft for trying something a bit different, and I think it's okay for a game to have its own unique identity in the franchise. It's still a solid 7.5/10 followup to its 9/10 and 10/10 predecessors and still worth your time if you enjoyed 2016 and Eternal.

Yes, you can play it to completion without a Steam Deck!

I used an Xbox Elite controller. When it prompts you to use gyro controls, just keep using the joystick.

I wanted to like this game. It's being touted as a visual masterpiece (despite surface-level gameplay) but there is actually a lot of visual artifacting and constant stutters that make it hard to enjoy.

Early Access Review
Very relaxing, no points or timers (in the default career mode), just wash. Good for playing while watching YouTube/Twitch on your second monitor.

very fun co-op game, ideal for playing with your SO or friends, like Overcooked but with a more forgiving difficulty curve.

I thought I would like this game because I liked puzzle platformers.

This is not a leisurely sunday afternoon game. The puzzles are brutally hard and there is no tutorial, no hints, no hand-holding.

I feel bad giving this game a negative review because it's clear a lot of work was put into its development, especially in the art direction. But staring at panels gets boring after a while, and there's nothing - no narrative, no reward, no satisfying ending - to make it worth it unless you really, really like logical puzzles.

If you want a truly unforgiving test of your logical intelligence, play this game. If you want a fun time, play Portal, Antichamber or The Talos Principle.
