Loved persona 5 and persona 5 royal so i decided to pick up persona 4 golden as well. Perfect timing too since its announcement on PC was around the time i had just finished royal. Now im not a MASSIVE SMT fan, like i know every nook and cranny and every butthole opening about SMT ive literally only played 5/5 royal and 4. So alot of things id say would probably irk or make a bunch of veteran SMT fans facepalm. So since ive played only 2 SMT/Persona games (i literally dont even know how different they are, all ik is persona is a spinoff of SMT) im gonna compare 4 to 5.

Gameplay
This by far is much weaker than 5, there are so many improvements that 5 implemented that i abhore in 4, the biggest issue i feel is the over reliance on physical skills, now ofc magical skills are still needed for those that resist physical skills. But i personally felt as long as the enemy didnt null, repel, drain or is strong against physical then just during a rush attack or using a couple of physical skills will always guarantee a instant win. Along with that there are a couple of very apparent difficulty spikes. I wont say when but the game imo jumps in difficulty randomly between 2 dungeons and it gets much harder for some reason, maybe its just because im ♥♥♥♥ at persona. But thats what i experienced. Alongside that dungeons r pretty boring... In 5 they had alot more life and story behind them, telling the story of the villains and allowing a seed of hatred and anger towards them to be planted in our hearts growing as we progress through. In 4 the only real sense of life we get is during bossfights and opening sentences when entering new floors, they just dont have alot of life behind them. AND one more thing that really irked me is how there are no "checkpoints", unlike persona 5 saferooms persona 4 just lets you travel to either the first floor or the highest floor you got to last time. Whats worse is if your returning after beating a dungeon and reentering (which yo u should, theres usually 1 more bossfight which gives good rewards) it just automatically resets you to the first floor without allowing you to continue from the top and get straight into the boss fight... why?? Theirs also weird ambush mechanics (at least imo) and a pretty wonky camera/movement system and finally a massive oversaturation of personas, its so easy to get personas (and it probably is better like that). I do have to say tho that the card system at the end of battles did make me raise an eyebrow at first but ive grown accustomed to it and actually end up liking it. All of this just makes it feel unintuitive. This is all in comparison to persona 5 tho, so... take it with a grain of salt

Story-telling
This by far is the strongest point of the game, the main story itself is persoanlly nothing impressive, its good but not extravagant. However what really stands out is the SL stories, these are realllllly good and can get depressing at times (yumi's) but alot of them have alot of life behind them and makes the characters feel reaaallly fleshed out, it also does a great job at bringing all the main characters together, showing their bond and deep woven friendship. It really makes them feel like a group of close friends thrown into unfortunate circumstances trying to live out fufilling lives in the country die, and i love that. Another amazing aspect i love is the whole theme of "facing ones true self" it really humanizes the mc's and shows how everyone has a dark twisted side, even those we trust dearly. And i love that, in P5 it always felt like the main characters were mostly pure hearted, sometimes there were signs that showed their hubris and how pride got into their heads but it doesnt really show their weakness or dark side as much as in persona 4 (royal does it better than 5 but i still think 4 is better) .

Sound design (voice acting, music, sfx, etc)
Its very hard personally to choose which game had better music, i absolutely loved all the songs in P5 and its jazzy theme it had going on. it fit so well with the whole character of being "phantom thieves" and stylish vigilantes. The music really did a great job at putting the player in the position of all the phantom thieves and fitting their role, persona 4 had some amazing music however. "Shadow world" "Your affection" "Heartbeat Heartbreak" "ill face my true self" the battle music, it just absolutely stomps many of persona 5 songs. Theyre just incredibly god like, but it didnt do as great of a job as putting us into the roles/shoes of our main characters (although they were always just highschool students, they never were anything over the top like "phantom thieves" so it makes sense). As for voice acting, i literally cant decide one over the other, both games have some amazing voice actors thet really invoke emotion into the characters and both are just outsanding.

Visual design
So its kinda unfair to compare visuals since by far persona 5 has visual designs LEAGUES above persona 4, but thats mainly because the game had a better system to work on (PS3 and PS4 for P5, while PSVITA graphics for P4G was just ported over onto pc with it being polished in the HD remake for PC) but i do have to say i like the whole countryside vibe and feel for persona 4 over the very clutered city of persona 5. But without a doubt art design is much much better for 5. Which is unfair... but i thought id still get it out there

Overall i love this game, the storytelling and music is just out of this world, while the art design is still good and enjoyable. And although i did ♥♥♥♥ on the gameplay quite a bit, i still absolutely love the turn based persona style combat. Im a sucker for it and ill probably never stop loving it

Having finished the game once i can safely say this game is alot deeper, interesting and complex than it appears on the surface. Having played only 4 hours of the game i have already completed it. But going through my second playthrough it is clear things have changed at that the game will be different. I was worried because the game seemed so short, but having played it more and literally restarting. I knew that it wouldn't end on my first run. The reason why this game is so fun yet simplistic is the extent to which it creates this level of deep interactivity with the player. The level of interactivity taken here is similar to that seen in DDLC (going through files, using computer programs, running applications etc. just to finish puzzles) but oneshot is by far interactive to a greater extent. Each puzzle was fun and unique without feeling confusing or frustrating and the feeling of reward and satisfaction when completing one of these complex puzzles is indescribable. (which is a high level of praise considering i despise puzzle games, or at least hate the elements of puzzle games) yet oneshot never seems to frustrate me to the extent that it takes away from the experience. Quite the opposite, it rewards you. Giving you more information of the world and the player, further expanding on the worlds rich lore.

The gameplay is one thing but the art design and sound design is another. The music is okay, some tracks are great. They fit the atmosphere and tone helping to enhance the experience, while some (imo) feel repetitive and annoying. But that only applies to like only 2 tracks out of the dozen or so utilised in this game. The art? Absolutely no complaints. Its a simple yet alluring artstyle that is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ beautiful, it can put some triple A titles to shame. Of course its not detailed or neither is it the best, but the simplicity of the pixel art and character design and world is so breathtaking. And whats amazing is the level of detail put into the world, each obejct, book, piece of paper is interactable (although some dialogue does repeat. But hey its haard to do that with like 5 million objects) and the level of detail put in to the background and world only further emphasise the level of love and dedication put into the game. And just sells the story and lore of the world a whole lot more. The game really does a great job at utilising its music and artstyle to establish a calming and heartwarming atmosphere.

If i had a gripe with this game (which is so minor that it really doesnt affect the score) its that sometimes the puzzles are srsly not clear at all (the major one being the library card, like wtf how???) and that sometimes when using the controls it can feel clunky or unintuitive which may frustrate some people. But playign enough will ensure it to be no problem

all in all 9/10. Gay :D

It might be stupid to write a review with so little hours into the game, but i felt like i had to express so far how amazing the game is. It's almost impossible to put into words the experience and whole vibe of the game. The art is so beautifully animated and comes to life, the music with its mellow and peaceful tone and the characters and their journey. Everything about this game and the experience is just astounding. Even when the game does get grindy, the boss fights, the enemies, it feels so rewarding that it doesn't feel grindy in the end. The experience as a whole is something that you have to go through yourself in order to truly appreciate the game. Just buy it now OmegaLUL

this game is beautiful, the artstyle the music, the sense of adventure and exploration. I played this game waaaay back when it was still in alpha (Dec 22 2017), i did transition to rainbow six siege for a year so i didn't get to see the updates very much. But coming back to this game in 2019. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, there is so many new features to explore. New vehicles, new building, new character designs. So much has changed, but the one thing that hasn't, is the games great sense of exploration and adventure. Every cavern, mountain, planet, field, etc. holds its own mystical display and elegance and that moment when you get a rocketship, fly out and the music kicks in. It's hard not to feel a sense of accomplishment and progression, i got ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ goosebumps and i still do.

The game has very bright eye-catching colors that make the terrain and features pop out a looooot more. Accompanied with the light hearted music, it's very bubbly and calming. I haven't played in a while but if sandstorms still exist in the game i love it because sandstorms gave a whole new level of interactivity with the environment

The only thing that really irks me is the tons and tons and tons of grinding. Grinding bytes to get access to new tech, grinding resources to get new tech, grinding biofuel to provide energy at night time. It can get boring and that's what slightly ruins the game. They now have a creative mode but that ruins the fun of exploring, im not saying i hate the grinding i just think it doesn't feel as rewarding. But man when you are able to get a rocket ship and truly start exploring. It can bring a man to tears.

Another VERY minor issue i have is the difficulty in using the terrain tool and accessing the research interface, the terrain tool can be very clunky and it doesn't really destroy the environment smoothly creating this very bumpy and hard to maneuver terrain which can be frustrating. the old terrain tool felt alooot better. The research interface to access new tech and use bytes is also slightly annoying to access

I'd like to see more stuff added, maybe creatures? New planets? But all in all this game is well polished and addressed many of the issues back in it's alpha. Love this game, but there are still some issues that could be fixed

At first it was fun, but for some reason the pace of the game slows down really fast after a couple of days, it does a good job at making the player actually plan out the management for resources. But at a certain point it can just get repetitive and boring. I don't think iv'e ever made it past like 1 wekk or like 5 days. But the dreary mood and depressing atmosphere is well executed, especially thanks to the artstyle and music. But cant say much for the gameplay tbh

I mean standalone the gameplay is good and the art is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ beautiful. But cmon, the servers and system to get new characters are so ♥♥♥♥♥♥. I got this game on the PS4 way back when it initially released and i put hundreds of hours into orochi. Learning literally everything about him. I loved it and seeing my bad ass samurai stomp people in 1v1's and dominion games was so fun. Sadly i dont play it on my PS4 anymore but coming back to PC and trying to play with friends is a nightmare. We weren't able to invite each other and the only way to join a game was to time our queues. NGL that was pretty sad XD. The system to get new characters as well, was it always this grindy? Maybe i didn't notice it cause i only played orochi but i'm not a fan of grinding this much. Gameplay wise this game is up there, top tier. But the servers, bugs and grindy nature. Not a fan

Early Access Review
Bought this game when it was all the rage with youtubers, but even then and now i felt disappointed. I thought it would be more fun but idk it felt boring to me. The art is good though and the way the game encourages you to be creative is nice. But i just didn't have much fun playing it

I bought this game 2 days after it released and i had some fun. the game itself was really fun, the combat was nice and the artsyle was pretty solid as well. But sadly even at week 1 the playerbase was dead and finding a server now is near too impossible. Such a shame too it had lots of potential

Absolutely amazing! I absolutely abhor turn based combat, its slow, it feels unrewarding and 99% of the time its accompanied with prolonged and tiresome animations. Only a couple of turn based combat games truly appealed to me (Persona 5 and Undertale) and Into The Breach is one of them. You only have 3 units, but with the inclusion of many different squads and 4 classes with a variety of different types. Mixing and matching the units & classes yield a surprising amount of content and variety. The game is short, partitioned into 4 islands with 5 missions each. But man does the difficulty ramp up.

By island 2 if you didn't properly power up your units it can be an absolute nightmare. On the surface this game seems simple and straight forward, but once you dig deeper you find out that this game has layers and layers of complexity. Different environments with different hazards, different units, different missions, different rewards and if you take into consideration that some of the land is destructible this makes each and every fight a new unique level providing us with a whole new experience.

The artstyle is veeeeeerrrryyyyyy simple, but it doesn't mean its bad, in fact i've fallen in love with it. Especially the attention to detail on the units, enemies, environment and buildings. Assets aren't reused on each island, they each have their own themes, their own style, their own blocks. Its astonishing. The music is to die for, they're catchy and set up the mood nicely.

the only problem i have is that in order to get new units you have to complete the achievements, which isn't bad but some of them are incredibly hard to do. Especially when you're first starting off and you wan't to get new units to experiment and see, its gonna require alot of time and effort and might get frustrating. However, this can also be a way to encourage the player to be more creative and logical in battle, which is a key skill you're going to need.

Ive only put a couple of hours into the game, but i can see myself putting in hundreds more . all in all a 9/10 babbyyyyyy

This game while simple is a phenomenal game, from the soundtrack to the animations, to the character designs and actual gameplay itself. You can feel the dedication and love put into this game when playing it. At times it can be frustrating and hard but nothing can compare to thrill and sense of accomplishment when you pull off that one in a million badass play. My only gripe is that sometimes the controls can feel very clunky and when trying to preform some moves it will end up whiffing entirely (especially rolls and wall jumping). But 99% of the time the controls are fluid and tight. 8/10 babyyyy
