The game mechanics differ from the demo and thus I can no longer recommend the game.

In the demo, to unlock new items you gathered "souls". These were received through progressing as far through each run as you can, as well as taking additional risk on killing as many enemies as possible per stage. Unlocking one character would take multiple runs.

In the release, you unlock items by earning shards gained through steam achievements. This creates an initial burst of progress (I unlocked every single character and half a dozen emblems in the first run, which would have taken many hours in the demo) and then stalls until you unlock further achievements.
