This game should be very good, but it fundamentally doesn't respect the player. The tactics layer is interesting but the sheer weight of cannon and ship mods on the elite and boss enemies makes the tactical layer irrelevant. I guess if you slam your head into the wall enough you can get enough mods and cannon yourself to make a run interesting, but I don't think that you should.

This game is a mediocre roguelite, with no risk or loss possible. It is not campaign-based like the first game. As such it features up-only progression mechanics, and locking of interesting character traits and skills behind a metagame grind, rather than unlocking during a run, which are relatively short.

Darkest Dungeon was a game about risk/reward, a game where you could lose a character you'd invested in, a game you could lose a campaign of. A game whose theme was risk and loss and failure. To make a grind-based roguelite as the sequel is a lame departure from an interesting niche into a crowded field where it does not stand out.
