A buggy mess. Badly optimized. Monetized to hell. Gameplay is fun, it's too bad you get to experience it once every hour between the crashes and 100% CPU-usage fps drops which lead to disconnect.

Such a buggy mess it'd be hilarious if it wasn't so game-breaking. The story is boring, so many characters I don't care for the slightest. Also: in co-op, which was the only reason I bought this, your partner doesn't get the gun unlocks etc. because it's YOUR story and they are just a guest there. Don't buy this.

First, I need to say that this game was part of my childhood, so my review might be a bit biased. That being said, this game does what the original 2006 release set out to do, and dare I say, for once the remake does it better.

The goal for you and your protagonist is very simple: conquer the Earth (not "Destroy All Humans", contrary to the name). The story is very average — perfect for a game like this. Missions tend to be repetitive if you strip them down, but the changing setting makes (almost) every mission interesting. The stupid jokes during the cutscenes and the gameplay made me snort a few times. The game makes light fun of 1950's communist-fearing, suburban-loving, burger-eating America, so there are some low-hanging fruit but I personally like the style. However, I would argue the story is not the main point of the game, armageddon-style shooting and blowing things up is.

The gameplay feels very smooth and satisfying. You are running, gliding, flying and skating through the cities and farms. You zap, burn, smash, explode not to mention probe through the citizens, who seem to beg for it with their moronic and obnoxious voice lines. And that is only when you are on foot — get in your saucer, and your powers triple. Crypto's arsenal isn't amazing, but you have all you need for some Grade A carnage. The game has simplified some mechanics from the original game, but added some new stuff too (I love SKATE!!!). I have to say, after completing the game there isn't much else to do than tormenting those virtual citizens in free roam.

The game feels very polished, no game-breaking glitches or bugs to be seen. Definitely some minor funny business when using SKATE, but it didn't really bother me. The devs really did a good job on this one and didn't just release the game half-done to be beta-tested buy the consumers.

There are three boss battles, which felt quite anti-climactic and too easy. Especially the last one was just shooting and running, no special gimmicks to mention, just shoot the thing until it's dead, and oh, here're some minions. This is where I should mention the game, staying true to the early gaming era, has no difficulty setting. If you are looking for a challenge, you might not find it here. And this is coming from someone who got frustrated by Dark Souls III in the first few hours and quit. That being said, had I been using a controller, the game would've probably been harder.

The visuals and audio are very nice. Overall there is a cartoonish draw style. I think it fits nicely to the game, reminding the player not to take it too seriously. But that doesn't mean it isn't well made: be it buildings exploding with a nice bass and disappearing into a ball of fire or a Private's head making a gratifying PLOP sound when his brains jump out, It all adds to the satisfaction you get from destroying everything. Everything in this game is crafted to make it a perfect virtual power fantasy.

Aside from the story and its optional objectives, there are 4 challenges and some collectibles (drones) in each of the 6 areas of the game. It took me 15 hours to complete every achievement, of which the story took about 7 hours. And I had to replay most missions to to complete the optional objectives. I'd say the playtime for 100% completion is around 10-20 hours for the average gamer. There is practically no replay value, since it's a strictly linear game.

TL;DR: Better than the original. Smooth, satisfying power fantasy. Worth 30 euros? For me it was. There's a fun story, great gameplay and some side content. You don't need to have played the original to like this one. 9/10, would buy and play again for the first time.

Don't let my Steam playtime fool you, I've played this game for countless of hours outside this platform. Battle for Wesnoth is an amazing turn-based fantasy strategy game. I've had so much fun in this game I still have a hard time believing it's free. As all the greatest games are, BoW is easy to pick up and learn the basics through the campaign but the skill ceiling is high. The basic idea is so simple but the mechanics allow for so much strategic depth it's unbelievable. And if the AI is too easy for you and you want a good ass-kicking, I'm sure the gamers in online multiplayer will indulge you.

The soundtrack is iconic and adds to the immersion created by the in-depth descriptions and artwork of each character type. I often find myself going back to the soundtrack even when not playing the game. Again, quite a simple idea with a surprising amount of depth.

Just download it, it'll take like 10 mins and I guarantee you'll love it.
