- By the way, Portugal never really did anything with East Timor. They pretty much planted their flag back in the 18th century and said 'this is ours now', then ignored it
- In 10 years of Indonesian occupation/annexation, Catholicism in the population rose from around 20% to over 95% since the Catholic church helped protect citizens from various Indonesian war crimes and human rights abuses
- At one point Nelson Mandela basically said 'this is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up, you can't imprison all dissenting politicians @indonesia' to which indonesia responded by taking three months off a 20 year prison sentence for one dude
- Timor basically means east in their language, so their country is called "East East"
- They were ruled by Portugal for around 200 years, up until 1975 when the Portuguese just kind of forgot about them and they sort of gained independence. Within a few months they were then invaded by Indonesia and declared one of its provinces
- At one point the Australian secret service bugged the prime minister's office to get an edge in an oil rights negotiation (and recently it was revealed that they had been spying on various parts of the East Timor government for years before that)
- It exports the sixth most cinnamon of any country
