Fun game, when the servers are up. I was at the end of my mission in Freelancer when a server outage forced me to sit clicking reconnect for 30 minutes as I slowly made my way towards the exit. This was already frustrating and a complete waste of my time, but considering Freelancer is a game mode where you can not save/load progress during a mission and if you leave it counts as a loss and at certain missions will force your progress to reset it takes it to a whole other level of infuriating. This is just another example of an unfortunate casualty in the further enshittification of a beloved franchise as I can really only assume corporate greed was the driving force to design this otherwise strictly single player experience as always online. I can't imagine any other scenario where this makes sense and truly benefits the player, not to mention the server support will inevitably end and either the community will have to then create a workaround to keep playing the game they've "purchased" or hopefully this requirement will be patched out when the game reaches its end of life - I am extremely skeptical of the latter though. To the all the folks in art/sound/qa/etc who contributed to this -great work this is the pinnacle of Hitman. To all the decision makers who thought always online was the right call, learn from this failure and never repeat it or please retire - you are harming this industry more than you may be aware of and we would all be better off without you at this point.

Definitely worth picking up for the money if you are a fan of Extraction Looter Shooter game play with a Grim Dark Future setting, but are generally turned off by the overly complicated inventory management and sweaty players in games like Tarkov.

Be warned though, there is quite a bit of indie jank. The Ai is a bit unpredictable, not in a good, "Oh ♥♥♥♥ it seems like they are thinking" sort of way, but more of a "Dude is 3 feet away and looking right at me with no other threats but didn't see me... but when I ended up 10 feet away he decided it was graping time." And I have had a GPU crash out 3 times in one day (once being idle in the HUB so seems like there could be a memory leak happening?), although I'm running a 2080Ti still so ymmv. Even during singleplayer runs, if you do crash there is no hot-loading back into the map unfortunately so the game will treat it as a death which is pretty frustrating.

The biggest backlash being the water mechanic, in my opinion, is a bit overblown as it's pretty simple to get water stockpiled through quests and quick runs. If what others have described here turns you off maybe it's not for you but I'd argue it's a fun mechanic and provides a good reason to revisit the game as updates roll out overtime - regardless if you come back periodically to top off your community or decide to let it run dry and start from scratch.

Edit: A note to the dev team - I just wanted to also say I'm really looking forward to where you all take this by the end. Indie folks seem to be the only ones really attempting to innovate in this industry anymore so seeing games like this give me hope I'll be enjoying games well into my twilight years, assuming Forever Winter's setting remain fantasy XD 0_0;
Thank you for all your hard work!

The bones are there for something good, but it does feel lacking in some of the more in depth mechanics that make games like Rimworld and Crusader Kings 3 feel like true story generators. For me what sets those two apart compared to Norland is the sheer volume of random yet plausible events that occur around your immediate sphere of influence and across the broader world, which is something I can certainly see improving over time. I think if the developers listen to some of this early feedback they are getting from people here this will be a great game with a bit more time in the oven. Rating for the algorithm, this doesn't deserve to be mixed even in its current state.

This is one hell of a fun little game by a dev team that clearly enjoyed making it. These are the devs that make me so happy to have basically dedicated my life to video games. Keep it up guys!

If you liked the first one, this won't disappoint. Ninja Theory are professionals at crafting playable movies.

This game is one of a kind and if you're looking for an mmo war game to sink an unhealthy amount of hours into then you've come to the right place.

Very unique MMO war game that I think some people get way too emotionally invested in because that's what it calls for to "win" at times. I don't really see the imbalances some others say are at play here, there is some asymmetry to the factions but from what I can tell there are pretty clear strengths and weaknesses that can be exploited for each side. In my view, it comes down to getting others healthily invested in the results and, if the review bombing is any indication, that's no small feat.

I will say that I think the Logi and Building roles do need some love. I'm not into Factorio or base building games typically but the time it takes to farm resources and get supplies to the frontlines is frankly cripplingly boring. I'm not sure if it's a matter of better understanding the mechanics at play here or needing to coordinate better, but that seems to be a general consensus of the community and something as important as supply lines and town maintenance for a faction need to feel more rewarding than they are in my opinion.

Hell yeah you should pick this up. It's games like these that remind me why I love games so much as a medium. The story isn't even complete and it's already leagues better than some of the better narratives out there. My one critique is the acting can be a bit campy at times, but it honestly adds to the character. If you liked Papers Please and love narratives this is one of the most fun experiences I've played in awhile.

I might come back to this, but after waiting for the 1.0 release to see where this game could go and seeing little to no improvements since I first tried it out in early access I don't really feel like wasting any more time on it. It's a slog to do much of anything. Crafting of structures feels needlessly slow adding one material per swing of your hammer where most structures require upwards of 50 swings draining all of your tool's condition just to finish. Hunting with the spears early on is unrewarding and as far as I can tell it will be awhile to get a bow. The dialogue is bland and I often find myself skipping any talking bits because I quickly stopped caring about anyone the game has you interact with. Gathering components for items or structures is also chore as they have you "press and hold" E to pick up a majority of items which is needless annoying in a game where at least 50% of it is about gathering. I'm sure as a building and town simulator this has great potential to see just how long you can go and just how big your city can be... it's just a shame that the gameplay leading to that is just so damn tedious and boring.
Pass for now.
