Starbound is kept alive by the modding community. And that's all. Official updates eventually killed the game - what was once a unique experience for each playthrough ended up being an extremely streamlined and repetitive incident.

I once loved Starbound. Honestly. I remember playing it with my friends - we would meet in one of our spaceships to play Zelda songs in our recently found instruments and to show off our new skills, and then we would descent into unknown planets to look out for NPC villages... Man, those were the days. This game was REALLY good in the past, giving players freedom to advance on their own or settle down as they wish.

But then the story nation attacked. And now most core aspects of the game are hard-locked behind a boring and dull story progression which will make most casual players give up.

Starbound went through several game advancement changes during its development, but it was never so linear as it turned out to be in the Cheerful Giraffe version back in 2016. It should have been named the Lethiferous Giraffe instead, considering that on that very release this unholy forbidden story arc was added. Starbound has currently ZERO replayability - you'll unlock skills in the same order, craft stuff in the same order, visit the same planets, do the same quests, have the same adventure over and over, over and over and over and over and over and over...

Most beta players complained about the released changes. And then immediately the game was officially launched. Stonks af.

I wonder what goes wrong with development for all those 2D space-themed games. Jesus, look at Edge of Space. Ew.

If you want the "good" Starbound, give its older versions a try. Also bring some friends. It'll suck less. Or just go play Terraria instead.

Edit: Apparently word got out that Chucklefish is also a terrible company that doesn't pay their workers. Amazing stuff.

why did somebody compare destiny to starbound. they are so different. but yeah just bought this game and the story is already boring. and I found a "boss", and all i had to do was tower a bit with blocks, then stab at it with my spear. really easy. the story makes this a lot less fun :(

Don't get me wrong lads, I would love to love this game. I have fond memories of its past versions. But the fact that it could've been so much more really saddens me. Devs literally pulled the plug and left it at the hands of modders - and that's a low move from a project that had such a huge and successful funding campaign. As some other reviewers have put it, the game gets extremely repetitive really fast. Still, being a dev myself I may come to understand which decisions ($/time) led to this ruinous path.

One would think that an "randomly generated endless game" would have much more to offer than its content-limited, finite map counterparts - but that was never the case. If you guys don't believe me, look at Terraria and Starbound sales in any Steam charts website. Numbers never lie. I know Terraria is not the space sandbox game we all wanted Starbound to be, but neither is Starbound. :cozycastondeath:

@DivineEvil have we played the same game? Literally 90% of vanilla game content is locked behind the first story mission. Most outpost stores are unlocked after completing story missions. There's endgame content that is only unlocked after completing the WHOLE storyline

Let's not also forget that the game has a lot of bugs. I've encountered several gamebreaking instances in the game where I was stuck and needed to use CHEAT commands to leave. You'll also encounter lagging in-game as well. These issues I've listed never happen in Terraria.

I don't think there's a single core aspect of the game that is reliant on the story.

You're right, the story killed the game, and without mods it's really bland.

Ya that's the fate of this game. Starbound is just laggy trash without mods. Still laggy but at least fun with like 200 mods
