An amazing addition to the world of turn-based tactics games. When you thought turn-based tactics games were well defined on what they should be, Narcos introduced something new. However, this game does have issues with the newly introduced concept.

Familiar TBT game elements:

  • Have a cover system, full cover and half cover.
  • Two action points, one for movement and one for skills or action.
  • Different classes and skills.
  • The infamous hit chance on every turn-based tactics game one of my characters missed a 95% shot and got himself killed.

How this game differs from other TBT games:

  • Two different storylines are available.
  • No in mission save. Only auto-save is available.
  • You and AI can only move one of your characters instead of the whole team.
  • Have a killshot system. If you deal with critical damage, you have the option to finish the enemy off with killshot (does not consume ammo)
  • New overwatch system: During the enemy turn, “Counteract” can trigger if they are in your line of sight and weapon range. This allows you to attack a moving enemy. And to Counteract, you will need Counteract Points, which can be earned from kills and certain skills. Counteract is kinda a quick-time event.
  • Your character can spend one action point in the mission to recover 1 hp. Each character only has HP.
  • Have a unit bonus (surviving squad for the mission) and global bonus (anyone you have hired) to level up
  • Weapon damage is fixed for each weapon, but some traits and skills allow you to fire more bullets for each attack, thus increasing the damage dealt.

The good:

  • The game visual looks great. The cut scenes and voice-over are also done really well. Some of the cut scenes might come from the TV series (maybe some of the missions are from the TV series based on the live action cut scenes?).
  • Relaxing scores and in-game sound effects.
  • Can play as DEA or cartel. Both are linear and easy to follow.
  • Auto save only after finishing a mission, and there is no in-mission save. If you do not plan ahead of time, it is highly likely that your character(s) will die. This feature won’t be new-player (to Turn-based Tactic games) friendly. You can always return to the main menu and retry the mission.
  • Good skill design and selection system. The skill characters get when they level up can really help out a mission and sometimes be life-saving.
  • Good map design and character design. Although the maps are limited, each map is well-designed and goes quite well with the classes available in the game. Some classes will shine on certain types of maps. Make sure you bring one of each class in your squad. You never know when some skills or their huge amount of health might come in handy

The mix:

  • AI behavior: Still in a completely offensive or entirely defensive stage of AI.
If you move one character closer to them, they will rush you one by one. They will not pursue you if you fall back, even if you are a lone wolf. In a way, this makes sense. AI wants you to go to their position, while they can use Counteract to damage you first. But once you unlock the grenade launcher class, you can hit the enemies quite far away. However, AI would still be defensive and let their soldiers be blown up without taking action.
There are also instances where I rush someone to damage the nearest enemy; instead of fighting back/healing/retreating to cover, AI would abandon that cannon fodder and move somebody else far away.
  • Minor issue: The lines characters speak sometimes do not match the lines shown on screen.

The bad:

  • Like what others have mentioned, there are a lot of turns just used for healing and reloading.
  • There are missions where the enemy gets reinforcements. They are triggered when you complete certain objectives. The drop zone can be behind your back, which means your characters can be already out of ammo or injured, and now they are being flanked.
  • There are places on the map where enemies can hit you, but you cannot hit back.
  • Some missions have turns limited objectives. This would work if you can move your whole team like other turn-based tactics games. When you can only move one character, killing enemies, reloading, and healing become quite challenging and annoying. AI will always rush you as if their lives do not matter, but you do not want to lose your squad members. The fight becomes a bit unfair.
  • A few bugs encountered:
The mouse cursor would disappear after completing a Narcos story mission. You won’t lose your progress, but you do have to force quit the game. Not sure if it is because I run the game on Windowed mode.
The squad screen would show incorrect squad members before a mission. Removing squad members and re-adding him would resolve the issue.
Enemy can move on top of a cover, and you won’t be able to damage the enemy.

Overall, I quite enjoyed playing Narcos: Rise of the Cartels. I liked the idea of moving only one character at a time. But the new system should be better implemented or balanced before your turn and the enemy turn.

Try it out!

Having mixing feelings about this game. It has some nice concepts, but the gameplay becomes boring really fast. Towards the end of the Police campaign, I was relieved to see the last two story missions happened back to back, so I did not have to raid another place ever again. Not recommending the game due to the repetitive aspect of the game.

The common TBT game elements:
  • 2 action points per character can be used for movement or skill. Character position and direction also matter in tactical combat.
  • Have a hit chance and critical hit system for melee and gun combat.
  • Certain attacks or skills can apply buffs to allies and debuffs to enemies.
  • Different classes and different skills for each class.
  • There is a fast save and fast load system.

How this game differs from other TBT games:
  • You can play as a rising crime family to take over all other crime families in London or the police to take down everyone.
  • All characters have health and stamina. If characters run out of health, they die. If they run out of stamina, they are knocked out. This is kinda different than all the other TBT games I played, where they use armor (reduce damage taken on health) and luck (runs out first, then take damage to health)
  • Focus on melee combat. You can also use firearms, but I barely use them because of the Zone of Control and a lot of melee skills each class can use.
  • Introduced “Zone of Control”. It is like overwatch but for melee combat. If you place your character well (such as around a door), you can use Zone of Control to take out an enemy or reduce their stamina by half.
  • Some attacks can only be performed from a specific direction.
  • A variety of activities you can do in the criminal campaign. Each location gives a certain bonus.
  • Have unique indicators of Respect, Influence, Fear, and Heat for the Criminal campaign and Evidence and Safety for the Police Campaign.

The good:
  • The scores for the game are great. Gives you the 60s vibe. But you will get bored of it after listening to them after 5 hrs
  • Can either play as a criminal or police. Both storylines share some common events, but one is told from a criminal perspective and the other from a police perspective. The Police campaign is shorter and easier than the criminal campaign.
  • Criminal campaign is kinda similar to XCOM games. You need to take over properties on the map and ensure enough income to pay your crew while safeguarding injured and fatigued crew recovery.
  • A variety of melee skills for each class under Criminal campaign. I had a lot of fun using those skills.

The mix:
  • Experience gained from a mission is not carried over to the next character level. Say you gained 300 exp from a mission at lv 1, which requires 200 exp to level up. Your character will level up to lv 2 but with 0 exp. Your character will max out easily throughout the campaign, but I still find this quite strange…
  • The menu UI has no direct “Continue” option to pick up where you left off. You will need to click Load to load the autosave or manual save.
  • No End turn for all. You have to skip a turn for each character you bring.
  • No way to speed up the game. Enemy turns become quite long when you play as the police (you have to wait for criminals and civilians). There are also cut scenes every time you knock out an enemy, which becomes quite annoying after 5 hrs.
  • Not a fan of the voice-over on the criminal campaign. It feels very dry. The police campaign is better.

The bad:
  • Highly repetitive. All the missions are similar to each other. Go into a store, beat up some guys, or grab some loot. You have to beat different factions to take over London, but they are all similar. It makes sense in the game setting, but the gameplay becomes less fun the longer you play.
  • Characters body is not loading up in some games. It will be just a floating head. Only encountered this in the criminal campaign.
  • Enemy can shoot through walls with no line of sight.
  • Even if you wiped out a crime family under the Police campaign, their mobs will still appear on the map.
  • Minor issues: Some grammar mistakes in the game.

Overall, Company of Crime is okay in terms of turn-based tactics. I enjoy the new mechanics and ability to play both sides, but the very repetitive gameplay to slowly advance the storyline is a big thumbs-down for me.

Having never played This Is The Police 1 or 2, I will focus on the turn-based tactics perspective of the game.

The common TBT game elements:
  • 2 action points per character, which can be used for movement or action. Picking up items does not cost action points.
  • A cover system: full cover, half cover, and no cover. The cover system affects the hit chance when using firearms.
  • Distance to an enemy affects the hit accuracy.
  • Inventory management: You can buy various items from the shop. The items you buy can potentially make maps easier (such as lockpicks, tasers, flashbangs, body armor, and helmets), especially for some bosses. I played one mission carrying only batons and got all my cops captured by a mob boss…

How this game differs from other TBT games:
  • No hit points: There is no health bar. One shot, one kill.
  • Skill management: All cops have the same skill tree. You can level up your cops by completing side missions and main mission objectives, arresting, injuring, or killing criminals on each map, and delivering high-value items back to extraction points. The skill you get for each level up is random but also related to the actions you chose for your cop in each mission. If you don’t use up both action points for some turns, you might get a skill related to it. If you manage to arrest a criminal without knocking him out first, you might get a skill to enhance your ability to arrest criminals.. But all cops will have the same skills when they reach level 10.
  • Rebel Point System: You can get rebel points for certain actions. The points can later be redeemed to make the mission much easier or get you out of a tricky situation.
  • Street Cred: Affects store item prices. When you reach -10 street cred, cops on your team will leave you.

The good:
  • Linear storyline, but it is amazing. I did not see the ending coming…
  • The scores for the game are the best. Love the combination of piano, bass, viola, saxophone, and drums. Very fitting for each mission.
  • Permanent death: As the game said, one single shot can cost a cop their life.
  • Stealth: You can complete the missions in any way you like (except the loud missions), but I like that the game prefers you to complete as many missions as possible in stealth. You are leading a ragtag squad of cops, and your resources should be limited. Going guns blazing will drain your ammo inventory really fast. Stealth forces you to be careful not to rush and check every corner because you never know who might be patrolling on the other side of a corner.

The mix:
Some missions can be really long, one in particular very early. One mission took me 5 hrs and 12 mins to complete, but that is because I wanted to complete all objectives and find all the items on the map. I nearly got discouraged by the size of the map and worried all the rest of the missions would take that long. However, that mission is the only one that takes that long. Don’t let that discourage you from completing the game. I do hope the developer can put the large map mission toward the end of the storyline.

The bad:
  • Cannot rotate the camera angle. Sometimes, I wish to rotate the camera angle to see where my cops can go. Nothing critical, I only encountered this probably twice for my playthrough.
  • A few bugs on random actions the cops can take, such as grabbing a corpse or arresting heavy armored mob. It happened twice in my 27 hrs of gameplay. It can be annoying, especially if you only use the limited save. Potential means you might need to reload a previous save.

Overall, Rebel Cops is a solid turn-based tactics game. I quite enjoy stealthing most of the missions. Feels accomplished after arresting all the criminals in maps without any casualties.

The gameplay is short. You can 100% the game within 16 hrs. Recommend playing it on Mythic difficulty if you have played other turn-based strategy games. The game will only get challenging on the last mission.

Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics is a “pure” turn-based tactic game. There are story and side missions (which you don’t have to complete but are required for 100%). Each mission gives you different equipment rewards that you can bring with you to the next mission. Other than inventory management, it is purely focused on turn-based gameplay.
The good:
Game mechanics: Your characters in the game don’t have armor. The game introduces “luck” and “stress”. When Your characters get hit, they will lose luck first. If their luck value is 0, they will then take damage to their health. Their stress level, which affects action points and weapon accuracy if full, can increase by enemy skills, getting hit, and the status of their teammates. Don’t put all your characters together sometimes. It becomes tricky not to die when the whole team has only half of the action points and is surrounded by high-health enemies. However, AI in the game doesn’t have luck or stress. To compensate for this, AI has more health than our characters.
The mix – Depending on what you are looking for:
  • The encounter mechanics: You have a party of 4 fighters and can explore each map however you want. But you cannot split up your party to strategically place your soldiers to make each encounter easier. This means when you encounter a group of enemy soldiers, they will get into cover, leaving you in the open or places with limited cover. It makes each fight a bit more engaging and fits the game’s storyline better. You are “exploring” enemy territory and don’t know their whereabouts. But it kinda removed a part of the strategic element from each encounter. I basically choose the same strategy every time: use up all the action points during the first round and retreat to a chokepoint on the map, and the enemy will follow. Then, you will have all your action points and covers starting the next round. You can pick off whoever pops up from the edge of the fog of war.
  • The AI behavior: As mentioned, most enemies will follow you wherever you go. They will try to split up and use the pincer maneuver if the map allows. But most of the time, they just leave whatever covers they have and charge into the kill box I set. Each mission becomes repetitive really fast.
  • The storyline: The game has only two cutscenes, and all story development is delivered at the beginning of each mission. It still provided a complete story, even though it is short. This is perfect if you only want to enjoy the gameplay. But if you want to know more about the storyline, be warned!
The bad:
  • Loading: Loading saves sometimes takes longer than I expected. Not that this game requires you to constantly load previous saves. But it does take longer than the mission starts loading screen.
  • Hit chance : I guess this is quite common in all turn-based strategy games. It still drives me crazy every time I encounter it. Here is one more… And loading previous saves won’t affect the hit. I tested that, so now you know why the first point existed.

Overall, I enjoyed playing the game; it is a solid TBS game in the genre.

Amazing story, especially starting at chapter 11, Clifford Unger, when everything starts to piece itself together. Chapters 12 -14 are more than 2 hours long in total, and I enjoyed almost every second, even though I don’t control the character that much.
The game mechanics are pretty interesting, especially sharing structures with other players. I hope all the structures I build can help someone during their playthrough because I spent most of my time building highways and optimizing zip-line routes. Who would have thought building infrastructures and delivering packages would be this interesting 😊
You don’t need to reach the maximum connection level with all facilities to finish the game. But if you plan to achieve all achievements, be prepared to spend a lot of time running around the map(s) and playing those racing mini game over and over again to get the last two blueprints.

“Keep on, Keeping on”, but
“Rest advised”

A quite grindy game, which I am okay with. I love turn-based games, so I can stand playing the same mission repeatedly to try different strategies.

The thing I cannot stand is the number of game-breaking bugs in this game. I have to abandon a mission or force quit the game so many times that it makes the grinding experience much less fun to the point that I quit.

I regret buying the DLCs when they were on sale. Should have waited and bought that tier 1 HeroCraft PC Complete Collection from HB

The default keyboard control for the game is kinda uncommon. You would need to use Q W A S Z X. I would recommend using a controller for this game or remapping the keyboard for a better experience.

And the combat of the game is also not what I expected: There is a strategy to equipping proper items, but the combat itself is more like a button smasher type.

Update 1 (after playing an additional 6 hrs):
Combat is okay. If you have equipped the correct items, it will make the combat much easier. Enemy can heal themselves if your weapon damage element matches their elements. I made a mistake by equipping all my weapons with the same element, and one fight took forever to complete.

I gave up on following the story. Like the difficulty setting, it is told in a visual novel style. You need to spam your buttons and read through the dialogues, which is not my type of game. I do like some of their dialogues, but the overall delivery through visual novel style is killing the game for me. Be warned if you do not like visual novel games.

The sound effects and in-game music got annoying really fast, so I muted them and set up my own music while playing.

Maybe I will finish the storyline one day.

Recenzie acordată în perioada accesului timpuriu
Would not recommend at the current stage. It is still at very early access stage.

There is no loading progress bar. I thought the game froze when I first started the game.

Also what are players' goal? Craft and survive? Are there any objectives or missions?

(This review is based on finishing the story mode for the first master, each level takes about 1.5 hrs to complete)
Have you wondered how the monsters feel when you play Slay the Spire? Are they just blockages you defeat to level up and gain some gold for upgrading? Well, these monsters have feelings.

Instead of playing as a hero, you play as monsters and the boss to defend loot. I quite enjoy how they approached and combined the Dungeon Management and Roguelite genres.

Like other Rougelite games, heroes are more powerful than monsters, which means your monsters or even mini-boss will die quickly. But if you carefully plan your play style, use proper traps, master spells, debuffs, and buffs. These heroes won’t typically pass the second monster dungeons.

The game has very nice game mechanics. You can defeat heroes in two ways: by killing them or scaring them off. Depending on the story you choose, you need to adjust your strategy.

Overall, this is a nice Rougelite and strategy game!
