Poor launch, amazing updates. Much better now

EDIT: With the latest update the game has destroyed most progress I have made towards unlocking weapons in my 350 hours of gameplay.

Furthermore, existing weapons have been nerfed to account for the new weapon mastery system. This system has made unlocking weapon perks a near sisyphean task with hundreds of in-game hours needed to unlock a single loadout.

EDIT 2: Progression is actually quick, and I thought weapons were nerfed when in fact all class tress were reset making my character feel weaker. With the latest update, I'm having more fun than ever with QoL improvements and new Psyker weapons, which finally make a melee psyker build super fun!

As a primarily MP player, I can't speak to the failures of the campaign gameplay oft-referenced in negative reviews.

Regarding the multiplayer, WH3 has a vastly improved UI with a less clustered layout and better legibility. However glaring balance issues as well as bugs affecting unit response times can at times make the game feel sluggish and unresponsive.

I would absolutely recommend this game, though perhaps in a couple months from now, when these issues have been ironed out.

It’s my favourite rogulike, if not all-time game. Maybe Stellaris takes that spot, but Gungeon is right behind it.

It’s a game with a decent backstory and progression system that ensure you’re not overwhelmed by an overly large number of items with a dizzying array of effects from the start.

It has a fabulous OST and highly polished gameplay mechanics with seemingly infinite replayability.

I should warn newcomers to the game that the learning curve is steep and the game can become a little frustrating at the offset, but once you learn the few relatively simple combat mechanics, it’s a charm to play.

Unfortunately I have not played many other roguelikes to have something to compare Gungeon to within its genre.

The two similar games from the genre that I have played were:

1. Hades, which I didn’t manage to get into as the mechanics didn’t feel satisfying to go through again and again (unlike Gungeon, which I feel I could play forever).

2. Binding of Isaac - a great game with satisfying, enjoyable mechanics that ended up seriously putting me off with its art style - it’s too depressive to stare at for an hour a day in my experience. Although I’d still recommend the game to those who like Gungeon and don’t mind the art style and vice versa.

Early Access Review
I’d like to preface my negative (since changed to positive) review by saying that I can’t in good faith keep it negative as I want to support this developer as much as possible, not least for their great and consistent community outreach over the years (including taking significant community feedback for this game) and the fact that this installment has great potential (though perhaps that’s a good two years or more away).

It will likely never be a spiritual successor to Wargame, as claimed by Eugen, but it can be a great game in its own right with more work.

There are already many mechanics and engine changes that are vast improvements over Wargame, but WARNO ultimately feels like a fundamentally different game.

Review:

Unit balance is all over the place, for example, many infantry units are more expensive than some high-end helicopters, furthermore, the cost of helicopter variants varies by as much as 5 times the original cost depending on loadout (80 points for an Apache with Hydra Rockets as compared to 420 for one with Hellfires all other equipment being the same).

Most insultingly, my favourite aspect of the WG series, apparent realism, is completely gone - helicopters tank shot after shot of AA, with an explosion radius 5 times the size of the helicopter. Same goes for infantry/light vehicles units being able to take shell after shell of HE artillery to the face and come out with a few scratches.

On a final note, I really hope Eugen does away with the garish and entirely over-the-top markers and whiteboard UI.
