It's what you wanted Fallout Shelter to be, and without microtransactions.

It's not perfect, but I'm going to tentatively recommend this game.
My major concerns have been stated already: tough AI, feeling like the game is stacked against you, constant challenge. I think they're manageable problems that don't keep me from enjoying the game.

I don't think I've ever wanted so hard for a game to have colorblind mode, though.

Two words:
Get. Mods.

EDIT: I'M NOT SAYING THIS IS A BAD GAME. I firmly believe that if you're interested in this game, you should try it, and at full price, even. I don't regret paying full price for it at all, despite my 'don't recommend' rating.

I really wish that I could recommend this game, but I don't think that I can right now. I've had the game since Early Access, and saw it promoted by some people as the 'better Spore'- but I've encountered some of the same issues as in Spore, though NOWHERE nearly as badly as Spore. The game crashes semi-frequently for me, and seems to fluctuate a lot between "wow, this is fun!" and "when will this part be over?" The sound has also given me a lot of issues with it crackling or sounding low-quality; however, the sound effects and music itself is really good.

It's sort of slow-paced and can be tedious, but I need to praise the art of the game (like nothing I've ever seen in another game, and weirdly adorable), the effort that the devs have put into it, and the genetics model.

TL;DR-
You might love this game, but if you asked me for game recs, this wouldn't be on my list.

The only game you'll ever see accurately described as "like (game), but combined with Minecraft" that's actually worth playing.

I'm not going to lie- this game is substantially more fun with at least one DLC.
But at the same time, there's a reason I've been playing the Sims series since the very first game. If the game crashes (which isn't fairly often for me), there's such a wide userbase that there's almost ALWAYS a quick fix. My only major complaint is that it doesn't accurately record my play time- I should have over 200 hours played.
