I'm going to say this straight up. You need to have a lot of patience if you want to have any hope of beating this game. This game is *hard.*

Now that that's out of the way, on to the review. The game, VVVVVV, is a hardcore platformer designed around the manipulation of gravity. The controls are very simple: left, right, and change the gravitational pull. However, do not be fooled by its apparent simplicity. This game, from beginning to end, is meant to challenge and frustrate, and only the most patient and skilled of players will be able to succeed. There are various different "levels" connected by a hub world, with each level presenting a different mechanic, such as wires that instantly switch gravity to auto-scrolling levels, for the player to learn. While the beginnings of these levels are meant to ease the player in, by the end of each section, the player will be required to have mastered the mechanic, if he or she wishes to succeed and move on. This all culminates in a final level designed to test even the best of players.

While a story is present, it's mainly just filler between levels, like many platformers. However, in a game like this, I find one unnecessary, as that's not what the game is ultimately about. I would even argue that too much story is present at times, as it can be a bit irritating to be forced to scroll through conversations to get to the next area.

Finally, I must say that I love its music, a fast-paced ode to the older days of the NES and SNES. It really fits the tone of the game and gets you pumped and ready for the challenges to come.

Overall, this is a great game, and I fully recommend it to any who want to truly test their platforming skills. This receives, from me, a 9/10.
