It's been touted by some as what you actually wanted from Diablo 3. After playing it, I'm kind of inclined to agree. Active skills are attached to gems which you can socket/unsocket from gear at will, which can force decisions between skills and better stats when your new piece of gear doesn't have the right slots. There are passive skills awarded upon each level up that look a lot like the FFX sphere grid. It's possible to build almost any way you want using this, but each class has passive skills which you're meant to specialize in (i.e. are easier to access). Microtransactions exist, of course, but have no real impact on the game, unless you count extended stash space. Also, has perhaps the most unique health potion system I've seen which I'd like to see done elsewhere. Your potions have X charges and use a set amount of charges per use of the potion. These charges replenish as you kill enemies. Furthermore, these potions are stored in their own separate inventory.

Basically, if you're interested in this style of game and have the hard drive space, there's not much reason to not AT LEAST try it out. Afterall, if you don't like it, you're out nothing but your own time. Only complaint at the moment is that like Diablo 3, it is online only, which means the servers aren't local and it's possible to run into bits of lag here and there, even with fairly good internet speeds.
