This is -exactly- what I wanted, but didn't realise it. I barely play single player games any more, but this is just brainless fun. Nothing to think too hard about, relatively easy (playing the highest non-NG+ difficulty), quite a bit to do in the way of side quests and things to collect. The movement is super nice, though I think the combat can be a bit frustrating, especially trying to lock on to rear limbs and flying enemies; you get the hang of the hookshot skill, but it's still not 100% reliable. Sounds is nice, VA is a good touch for this type of game, and honestly it looks pretty nice; don't get many desert landscapes but I think this one largely looks really good. Definitely recommend if you can get it for half off, really great AA level title that doesn't overstay its' welcome.

Nah. Precision platformer where the FOV is so close you can't see the collectables or traps, clunky controls and no meaningful indication of what or why. Play Splasher or SMB instead for a similar experience but far more enjoyable.

Game is great, haven't had this much fun in ages. Big props to the devs!

UPDATE:

Like many others, I loathe Sony's ridiculous and greedy decision that restricted paying owners to not be able to play the game. Now this move has been rescinded, I think we still need to support Arrowhead, and hope the talented team there learn from this disaster for any future projects. Between this and their past games, they are clearly capable of making fun, innovative games, and I wish them all the best... just hopefully not alongside Sony, post HD2.

I like this one. A lot of these retro styled games try way too hard for me personally, but this one has decent QoL, classic controls and tileset styles, and doesn't overstay its welcome. Music is on point, and took me around 4-5 hours to complete while collecting all the orbs, forgiving the fact I accidentally left it running for a few hours one day.

My only real gripe is here that given some of the one-way routes, especially mid game before all upgrades etc are collected, some of the warp and save points are WAY too far apart; I hate dying and having to spend 2+ minutes running back to the same location because the movement is pretty slow.

Definitely looking out for the sequel on sale, but having played this through, not sure I could validate paying the extra for the 8-bit editions. Recommend for a nice little metroidvania for sure!

I like it. Not without its flaws; the combat and UI is a little clunky, overlaps itself, and feels a touch slow, but the aesthetic and gameplay loop is satisfying imo. I'm not sure about the difficulty issues other reviewers faced; at level 6 derelicts, I still don't struggle almost at all, so perhaps it's a loadout thing.

Great for the price I paid (definitive edition for like a dollar equivalent in a bundle) but once I've beaten the campaign, I'm not sure how much motivation I will have for Arena or achievement completion. I'm enjoying it, but cautionary recommend. I wish it was a little more fleshed out story/lore wise, and if the UX was that little better, I think I'd happily give it a thumbs up.

Oh man, this is a tough one; I'm a sucker for food based games, and shop management games, so this was initially a no brainer for me as it looks pretty similar to Moonighter and Recettear. Unfortunately, I think this one needs a little more time in the oven.

Pros:
- the music and sounds are pretty good, quality wise...
- the visuals are nice and colourful, a good range of colour palettes too...
- plenty of quests and side quests, bits and pieces to level up etc
- good amount of furniture choices to decorate the restaurant

Cons:
- ...but sounds often overlap each other at the same volume, especially during restaurant service and combat. This makes it VERY hard to tell when someone is ready to order and someone needs to pay for example, and to telegraph enemy hits
- ...while the visuals are nice, the dungeons have INCREDIBLE visual clutter. By the time I reached the third dungeon, I was getting very frustrated at not being able to see the light yellow or blue enemy attack indicators against the light blue background
- upgrading equipment is almost entirely redundant given how many hits it takes to beat almost anything
- dungeons feel incredibly dull, especially when reward rooms/boss rooms only offer normal ground loot (maybe add furniture items to boss chest pool or something?)
- combat is VERY simplistic, and the interruption window for enemies is incredibly narrow
- one particular boss is incredibly frustrating the stupid ghost pepper. Seems to be no way to remove the pink homing ghosts it sends out, meaning you HAVE to have health items as it's borderline impossible not to get hit when they start
- upgrading stations; this one is particularly annoying, as you upgrade a station but it still doesn't give you access to the corresponding recipe level, but doesn't really explain this anywhere? I spent ages trying to figure out why I couldn't make a level 2 recipe with my level 2 station, only to realise the NEXT upgrade said "recipe level 1>2" ...why? this is a baffling choice. Either make the stations harder to upgrade if this is a pacing function, or expand the recipe tier list from 5 to 7 or something
- customers order cheap stuff almost always, so I've taken to deleting the cheap ingredients to force them to order more than just 80 consecutive meals of Bread for $14, when I have a fridge full of ingredients worth 10x more

It could be SO GOOD with some relatively minor changes, but for now... not worth it. I'll finish it, but it's more frustrating than fun at the moment. The devs seem to be paying attention to the commentary, so I actually have some high hopes, but we'll see!

This is a tough one; so much style, but I can't give it a thumbs up. The music, aesthetic, movement and quality are all great, with some super cool boss designs, but there just isn't enough of anything for the price, or to make the gameplay loop satisfying.

I've played through this entirely off steam, and found that after a handful of runs, I'd made it to the final biome and purchased all of the upgrades, with very little motivating me to continue. The lore is outlined so minimally that it errs on the side of redundant, the NPCs have barely any interaction (the base one literally sleeps unless you find something new for the first time, so about a dozen interactions in total), and while the rooms and enemies are random each time, there are a couple of minibosses per biome (literally a couple) with a single recurring final boss per stage.

I know they've add modding capability now so I can see the playtime increasing from the community, but as it stands, I'd suggest instead looking to something like Hades or Binding of Isaac, which have a ginormous amount more content for the price and effort.

This one was a surprise! Cool music, downright weird almost everything else, colourful, quite a bit of content and the right amount of fun vs frustration for the challenges. Took me by surprise but honestly worth the time, and I'm nowhere near done at the time of review.

Fantastic. Bought this on a whim after the positive press, and honestly, everything about it is great; music, characters, dialogue, cutscenes, story/lore, variety of gameplay, aesthetics; all of it is just honest fun. The only thing I dislike, and this is really nitpicking, is the QTEs; button mashing is always frustrating, and easily the worst part of the game, which should really emphasise just how good it is, as button mashing is rare and largely unnecessary to complete in and of itself. The variety of gameplay, minigames and content is staggering, and every time I thought I'd seen all that there was on offer, some new tidbit came along. Seriously great, especially for thirty bucks AUD. Definitely keeping an eye on this studio and will gladly pick up any DLC if they make it.

I was excited to play this; it looks very good in the images, and I don't really care about the hype for big titles, either positive or negative. Unfortunately though, in this case, I'd say it's justified.

- performance is weirdly patchy; frame drops in areas I wouldn't expect there to be, weird texture clipping and unloading sporadically, and sometimes it felt slow to respond to my inputs
- there might be a lot of loot and etc to find, but it's not like other open world games where there are points of interest, a la Bethesda, FromSoft, Sony titles; in the few hours I played, the loot was limited to some buildings etc, with little to no reward for exploring off the beaten track. This could have changed further in, but I couldn't get that far, it's too tedious
- combat is frustrating at best. There seems to be no interrupt to enemy attacks unless you finish a combo, but enemies normally hit so much faster than you do, do the point where it's almost impossible to actually finish said combo.
- aesthetically it's very vibrant, but I'm not sure it's that great quality; the character and gear in the menus looks -great-, but I feel that in the open world, the clutter and colours are there to detract from the quality of some of the assets
- sound is pretty nice for the most part, effects and music wise...
- ...but the narrator and story presentation is infuriating. If your characters are going to communicate in a made up language, then fine, but let me have subtitles only. The narration is incredibly annoying, and makes for some really jarring cutscenes.

I can't finish this, which is a shame, because it looks nice and seems to have some cool features and scale in the late game. But for a AAA title, it feels very janky for its release period, especially as the aesthetics and sound design feel so modern, but the gameplay and combat are so reminiscent of early PS2 era titles.
