I have now finished the first part of The Roottrees are Dead. There's still another one, Roottreemania for me to play through, but I already cannot contain my enthusiasm about this game.
So far I'm about 9 hours in, probably a bit of that time spent on the idling, but most of it was me chilling, listening to lovely lo-fi jazz and whispering to myself like a maniac about who-why-how, just to find out that one name I didn't necessarily need, really. I didn't even realize when that time passed.
As a man who finished Obra Dinn and had a lot of issues with it, TRoD gave me exactly what I wanted after Obra Dinn. The plot is interesting and digging deeper makes you want to know more, it's complicated and very rewarding to find new clues and fill in the blanks, it doesn't hold your hand at all - unless you want it to (the idea alone that the hint system is rubber ducky - I love it). If you decide to do it all on your own, it's tough at times, and it's very gratifying.
It was the case for Obra Dinn, too, but for me, the absolute lack of QoL and looks of OD (which made my eyes hurt very quickly) completely overshadowed the story and investigation itself, making it a chore more than it was fun for me. That is not the case in TRaD. There's exactly one thing of QoL I really missed, and it was making a custom notes on the name board as addition to the notepad - it would be nice, but ultimately it's absolutely nothing gamechanging. Everything is very clear in the game, you can figure out what and how something should be found, and if you are perceptive enough, there's actually very little to guess or try by trial-and-error. I know I've missed something, I did end up guessing a thing or two, but it didn't end up with the feeling of frustration like it was in OD - I just missed something, oh well. The investigation was absolute bliss for any homemade imaginary detective. I happened to use a hint once in the game, which ended up as something I didn't necessarily have to do (I had the idea about what hint told me before, just forgot to check it), but it gave me a very subtle nudge as to where I should focus my attention to find another hint, and then five more, and then lose another half hour of my life on connecting dots, having an absolute blast.
Visually, the game is very good. I love the idea of Windows 98-like environment (even though I really lacked tabs or separate windows for searches. I tried to alt-tab between sites way too many times). Arts are very pretty and for the most part, there is very little issue to figure out who might be a child of whom visually, I think I had that problem maybe with three people at most. Those are very detailed, too, which is incredibly important, considering you sometimes have to figure stuff out by small hints on someone's appearance, but again - never had an issue with that, which for me was a massive problem with Obra Dinn. Wonderful work. Music - fits great, it's very chill, it just makes you in the perfect mood for casual brain boiling. Makes you sit relaxed in chair, enjoying your casual evening, while you're desperately trying to find that one little hint you must've missed somewhere, which you require to next ten puzzles to fall in place.
We really need many, many more games of this kind. We cannot let Obra Dinn and The Rootrees are Dead to be the only games with such a good investigation theme out there. OD made a great groundwork, TRaD wonderfully enhanced on it in the best way possible, I can only hope this will continue.

I gave her "The Look". She liked it. Whatever happened next shall remain history.

That's one of the most beautiful stories I've seen. Visually it's stunning. Voice acting is incredible. The amount of paths and choices is massive, maybe even overwhelming, but just trust me when I say - just live with any choice you make, in the end it will be worth it. The story itself is simply incredible and I can't really say much about it without spoiling.

Definitely best going in blind. I can do nothing else but recommend it immensely. If video games should belong to the museums, Slay the Princess definitely would be put in a very honorable place.

It's a good little game, gives nice dopamine rush. It's not very long (The moment I'm writing this, I already 100% it), but for this price I got my fun. I can recommend.

I'm a fan of Viscera Cleanup Detail and PowerWash Simulator. In these games, cleaning up is grindy, but so satisfying, and in my opinion, there's just not enough of good games about this kind of work presented in this certain way on the market.

And now Crime Scene Cleaner joined the roster, and it's magnificent. Everything I love about Viscera and PWS - this grindy, but satisfying cleaning, working your way from the absolute mess to beautiful order, with levels filled with stories and secrets. It's really good. You should play it.

This game is the absolute definition of love-hate relationship.

On the one hand, I love it. It's fun gameplay. The idea of everliving war and smooth adding new stuff through it is superb. Want to have a mech? Go conquer the planet where mech factories are located.

On the other, this feels nothing but public testing. Devs constantly add things that are broken or just not fun at all. Enemies are too tanky for anything you have, stratagems cooldowns are way too long to help you out with most issues. When you are running away from six chargers and two bile titans at once and have nothing but two shots of anti-tank launcher and are three minutes from any stratagem that could help (and then when you drop it, it doesn't do anything anyway), it's not fun. Then you might get that one weapon that sticks to you, you click with it, it does job for you. Well, have fun while you can, because if that's the case, it's 100% getting nerfed to oblivion until it's on a brink of usability in a week.

It's a game where you can't have fun. If you do, it's taken away by devs. If I wanted to not have fun, I'd go to a dentist. At least a dentist actually wants to do something good for me.
