Having already played other games within the same genre, such as Superliminal, The Witness, Antichamber and Manifold Garden, I'd say gameplay-wise, Viewfinder is up there with the rest.

The storyline is nothing special, but it teaches a cute lesson if you pay attention to it.
That being said, you can play the entire game without paying attention to the story, and still get a lot of enjoyment from the puzzles.

The gameplay is pretty much the star of the game.
The mechanics are quite easy to pick up, and the difficulty curve progresses nicely with the game.
The game is rather short, but it remains fun throughout the entire duration.
A criticism is that it never gets too difficult, most puzzles are rather easy to figure out. The trickiest challenges are optional, so you most likely won't be blocked from finishing the game.

As a hobbyist game dev, I'm impressed on how they managed to pull out the mechanics. The game is rather stable too, I didn't encounter any important bug while playing, other than some sound glitches.

Definitely pick it up if it's on sale.

Still relevant after 20 years. Looking up for Definitive Edition this fall.

First off all I have to say I kinda felt forced to buy this expansion, because the gardens in the base version of this game look messy and horrendous, and there's no way to modify them without the DLC.

Although I liked the DLC and the content in general, I must say it feels a little rushed (i.e. not thoroughly polished). Here's a list of the little details I could find.

  1. Putting gravel makes my game lag pretty badly. I get consistent 60 fps but as soon as I look at a portion of the ground covered with gravel it drops to between 20 and 30. This, I suppose, might be caused by the sparkling effect gravel has.
  2. The brush cutter is way too quiet, and the garden hose sound effect ridiculously loud. Compare them both and it literally makes no sense at all.
  3. The brush cutter feels odd. You can barely see it when using. Also, in most missions you have to trim large areas, and it would make way more sense to use a mower.
  4. Sincerely, water looks awful. I can't be very specific about this, it needs a lot of work in every sense.
  5. You can literally parkour the plants. I mean, its fun and all to jump from plant to plant and climb the roof of the house, but its way too unrealistic (I personally like this, but some people might feel different).
  6. The fact that you can spread a turf roll infinitely is weird. They should have a finite max extension (run out, just like paint), and when being cut, you should be able to grab what's left and move it around to complete another patch, without having to buy a new one.

With all this the game might sound unplayable, but so far I've enjoyed a lot this DLC, and I know devs will try to fix issues like the ones listed above in the near future.
