In a year where I had already been blown away by Zelda BotW and Horizon Zero Dawn, I decided it was time to play Witcher 3. Even though this game is 2 years older than those, the game experience was nothing short of amazing. In my opinion the best open world game ever made (closely followed by BotW).

More liberty from the LOTR lore has been taken in terms of the story, but an awesome game if one can accept that. Improved in many ways over the first one. Quite fun building an army in each region.
