Early Access Review
When it's funny, boy is it funny. When it's scary, boy is it scary.

Let me first state that I want to like this game. I think that the idea and the elements of this concept can work really well to instill dread and really make you feel like you’re being pursued and hunted by someone. Beyond the fact that this game touches on a very serious topic of SA, I can appreciate that it takes a terrifying spin on what it can be like to be a victim. It is a horrifying and seriously traumatizing thing. However, the game never actually frightened me. While the concept itself can be scary, the execution of this made the horror and gravity of this story lackluster. The tension building of thinking that you’re being followed from the beginning of the game until you make it to the karaoke box is genuinely unnerving and I found myself getting invested. But it was the “release” of tension that botched the whole experience for me.

If you wish not to have spoilers, I suggest playing the game and seeing for yourself the endings.

The “finale” I suppose you could say, is the point of the game where the coach has entered the karaoke building and is now searching for you. This stealth section of the game is where the tension and build up has finally reached a boiling point and you are now alone in this building with a predator. It is again, a very scary concept. But when the coach catches you and tackles you, not only is there the issue that the animation plays in the same hallway no matter where you are in the building, but the animation of the coach attacking you is so abrupt, jittery, silly looking and sounding that I actually found myself laughing at the absurdity of the whole cutscene. After that I just found the entire stealth section to be more comical and frustrating, eventually finding out that it’s rather easy to get through by just sitting in a room and hiding under a table once or twice because his pathing is very specific and artificial. He fails to actually feel like a threat and more like a poorly made game of hide and seek. It was not scary. I did not feel any fear or anxiety. It failed to hold its tone and emotion because of the fact that it attempted what I feel is too much in such a short experience. The karaoke sections of the game don’t feel synced, the hallucinations from what I can only assume is the main character getting drugged made me wonder who else was with the coach. After getting all of the endings and playing through that stealth section probably eight or nine times just to explore around, there is so many questions as to where the staff went, why the whole room became a mess and why there was suddenly piles of glass on the floor (which actually never affected his pathing to my knowledge, I guess they were just there to be there). Maybe I’m being too harsh. Maybe I’m trying to look for answers in something that I should just accept and enjoy the experience of for what it is, but I find it hard to keep myself immersed when these are immersion breaking goofy experiences.

The other endings of the game are interesting and I do enjoy them putting effort into creating some really creative ways to explore the narrative. I will say that the smaller parts of the game like riding your bike to the karaoke box or singing while you can see silhouettes of people walking past the door, those little moments are eerie and I appreciate those moments a lot. But the release of tension is also a very important piece and I feel they failed. I still would recommend you buy and play this game for yourself though as it is still worth playing. It is a fine game, just not a great horror game.
