I'm a huge immersive sim fan and as we all know good games (or games full-stop!) in this genre are few and far between. I'd assumed the essence of a good im-sim was only achievable at the scale of Dishonored or Prey, so I had my doubts coming into an indie interpretation of that.

Happy to say my doubts were unfounded and I had a fantastic time with Skin Deep after picking it up in the summer steam sale. It really captured that im-sim flow state you get into while solving problems in the world systems. The delight of figuring out some new interaction just by thinking about it and watching the world react as expected. There's nothing quite like it, and it turns out you don't need a AAA level story or graphics to get there (not that it doesn't have some god tier janky-charm).

It's also safe to say that someone in the dev team likes cats, and while personally I am profoundly allergic I have to admit the absurdity of it all got more than a handful of chuckles out of me. I'm not too proud of myself to laugh at random uses of meow-meows and someone slipping on a banana peel.

I think my favourite thing about this game was the chaos of dropping in and out of stealth. I don't recall playing a stealth game (maybe since the controversial Splinter Cell: Conviction) where I had just as much fun failing stealth as I did successfully sneaking around. Not once did I load back to retry!

Anyway, play this game if you want more immersive sims - I'm desperate, and it's delightful. Additionally, the cats are made out of boxes, which is pretty great.

Fantastic little game. Spot on controls, platforming mechanics and a perfect balance between a hardcore difficulty and the ability to overcome challenges (at least for me). The music was really inspiring and carried the platforming, driving you forward in combination with the surprisingly interesting story about depression, anxiety and learning how to deal with you inner demons. The message being not to try and leave the worst parts of you behind (AKA ignoring the problem and pretending it doesn't exist). Instead you have to learn to live with who you are, both the good and the bad. You have to listen to your feelings and accept them for what they are - scared, anxious, depressed. It's ok to feel that way - you shouldn't blame yourself, or be too hard on yourself. Getting angry at yourself only holds you back and slows the recovery process.

If you can come to terms with your thoughts and feelings you can climb any mountain. Really happy with this game, and impressed that they managed to fit all of the above into a relatively small indie game, delivering visuals, sound, gameplay and a message in a very tight package. In the hardcore 2D platformer category I would say this is even better than Super Meat Boy.

Absolutely great game. I named a character after my wife and then told her about it. Big Mistake! If I let her character die I was going to get in big trouble. One mission I had to sacrifice the lives of two of my best soldiers to save her life. We only just made it out alive!

She died in the last mission and now we are getting a divorce.

10/10

This game is a gamble. You'll either have a near-life changing emotional experience and come out a changed person, or... you will be bored witless on an otherwise pretty walk on an island. I fell in the latter group unfortunately, and I cannot recommend this game.

I originally played this game on console and it ran like absolute trash. Literally 25 FPS, it wasn't enjoyable in the slightest. In contrast playing this game on PC has been an absolute treat.

Playing it with the Immersive Sound mod and Ziggy's Mod fixed every other problem I had with the console version, making it the game it could have been.

As a rather talented gunsman I couldn't honestly recommend this game without the mods. Without them it is far to easy, and far too obnoxious.

6/10 without mods.

9.5/10 with mods.

You're reading these other reviews, and they sound great right? Please, for the love of god do not listen. This game is not ready to be released. Wait. Buy the game and you will remember these words, and rue the day you didn't listen.
