Incredibly good game, probably one of the best bullet heavens. Core mechanics are good, bosses are actually bosses, equipment/upgrades are pretty fun for a while.
It's pretty great now and I can assume it'll be amazing as development continues.

This is more a feedback than a review, but it's also a review. My overall impression though is that it's a pretty solid game, especially for an "alpha" build.

The way the game is presented (the intro video with the genre soup) and trying to shove in talking points like "Nuclear throne (did it change from Isaac?) and Deus Ex with GTA" was pretty offputting, but it was free so I tried it out. Going off of that, the tutorial is also pretty bad. Mechanically it's a fine way to learn the mechanics but the 'narrative' of it was also kind of off.

Despite early misgivings I think the game's actually very good. There's "only" 2 zones currently but as I messed around with a handful of characters for a while, it took me till nearly the end of my play time to realize that (and it was only because I was specifically trying to get to the end). That play time was 6.3 hours, and in that I played through like 5-6 of the characters and got all the current achievements. The 6 that I played (Thief, Assassin, Hacker, Doctor, Jock, Police, and the Scientist to unlock the ghost) seemed pretty fun, though as I saw someone else comment, a lot of the classes are defined mainly by items they have, and those run out relatively quickly.

Thief can still pickpocket but will run out of his other tools, and while that actually won't happen much in the game because of the 2 zones, it'll most likely happen with other classes and more frequently later on. Classes whose quirk is a permanent thing, like the hacker, assassin, and jock feel much better because you don't have to be very stingey with it. I'm not entirely sure how you'd balance around it, (and it might be because of the classes I ended up playing but I didn't actually run into this almost at all) but that seems to be the main balance issue. Assassin is also super overpowered (though fun, through that).

The only other issue I can think of is the relative lack of variety in mission types. There's a small handful, and while they don't seem that bad because of the random generation, I'm sure they'd get very tiring later on. I'm assuming that later on in the development more might be added, as this is an alpha.

I think it's really good. Zone 5's pretty fun, and the new boss is neat as well.

Nocturna's a nice change of pace from the other characters, in that she actually seems pretty different, as opposed to most of them who were just increasing the difficulty. Plus her "downside" is that it makes all of the zones more fun. Once I figured out what bat mode did I had a lot of fun with that as well.

I don't know if I've seen all the new items but all the ones I've seen so far have been real fun to play with.

I'm a tiny bit disappointed the "20 songs" was 4 songs and the remixes, but this is supposed to be a "early access" expansion so maybe more will be added. The songs themselves are great though, as expected of Danny's work, and the expansion as a whole is pretty great, even when it's not finished.

It's a really good game, music's amazing too (unsurprising since it's Danny B).

The content added is pretty good but McMillen's been a gigantic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about 'secret' stuff since the Lost. I don't really regret getting the expansion but still.

Didn't know this came out, seems like pretty good DLC, missions give you some nice goals.
