This is the hardest game I have ever loved playing. I've never liked games that had an extreme difficulty level to them because I typically come to games to relax or enjoy a good story. And yet here I am, adoring every frustrating, anxiety inducing and statistically planned second I spend playing Pathologic. It's punishing and masochistic, but that provides a sense of immersion that really makes the plot and lore hit home harder than it ever could have if the game was just a detective mystery that it could have been. I never thought I would find so much joy in playing mental gymnastics trying to make sure I get a bite to eat before I die of starvation, only to get shanked in the streets by a mugger and getting then punished even more for it by having stats stolen away from me. It's masochism at it's finest.

If you love a game with hard decisions, mechanics that force you to really think about what you're doing, fantastic writing and lore, and are okay with heaps of stress and misfortune, play this game. Play it now.
