I played this game at release and have never really stopped thinking about it. Dev helped me out when my save got stuck, very cool. Nothing quite like this. Really the only things that kinda feel similar are good ass vibey source maps, ADACA, the occasional eastern european gems that put affection to the environments. I think if you're interested, you'll enjoy it, but some people will really, really resonate with it.

This game goes ♥♥♥♥♥♥ crazy I can't stop playing it. Great gameplay loop, great in-game achievements and challenges to go through for fun and unlocks. And that's all to say nothing of the rad setting, incredible visuals, and stellar soundtrack. If it looks remotely interesting to you, it's a must play for sure. If you enjoy the arkham horror card game, it's similar. Nothing quite like this, especially for horror.

Very rad. Great animations, great music, great colors and aesthetic, and incredibly satisfying movement that is fairly simple but used in complex and challenging ways that are fair and fun. Really nails everything it tries to do. It's 7 bucks for a handful of hours of dense, old-school 3D platformer vibes. Plus there's a ♥♥♥♥-off "do it in one go" secret level at the end for collecting stuff that's pretty great if you're a sicko. Highly recommend!

pretty immaculate vibes. very obvious love letter to some of the coolest stuff around, mostly king's field or even morrowind, including some obscure secrets and easter eggs. it lets you push the limits on some stuff, fun weapons and spells, really incredible music and atmosphere. it's a real blast, and it's pretty silly that it's only $7

if you've ever asked yourself "what would a king's field x morrowind x SotN game made by nobiney horror dev with fun and scary experimental-ish electronic music look like as an indie game released in 2022?" you now have an answer for your hyper-specific but very respectable question!

Prodigal is a game I initially skipped over because of the dating sim elements and kinda lightly sexual vibe it seemed to have. After giving it a shot, you can probably tell by my play time that my initial thoughts were fairly off the mark. This game is a really really cozy gameboy zelda style dungeon crawler/puzzle solver adventure, with the addition of light but not at all lazy dating sim elements. While there aren't tons of options for carefully building up relationships with NPCs, you instead get fairly compelling and genuine character development for all of them on a more linear path. For me, that was perfect, as I came into this more focused on the dungeon crawling and exploring side of things, but the character interactions across the board were fun and engaging to the point that I was actively seeking them out between my adventures.

So how is the adventuring and dungeon crawling side of things? Pretty good! It feels like a solid Gameboy adventure, you have some fun tools that are used in engaging and creative ways, and the puzzles aren't ever too tricky, but can occasionally have a few solutions and almost always feel fun and satisfying to solve. The more frequent but shorter puzzles are paced well and a good break in the action, sometimes even a supplement to the action! You're not going to see Crosscode levels of rube goldberg machine puzzles with 10 steps and precise timing (though I do love Crosscode, those aren't always my cup of tea). Bosses aren't ever too tricky, but they are short and sweet with unique mechanics, and they definitely ramp up throughout the adventure.

Speaking of, how's the story? Well, honestly it's nothing too crazy at first, but it sure as hell picks up. On my first very casual playthrough, taking my time and secret hunting, I figured the game was going to be over once something happened at the 4 or 5 hour mark, only to find out that, nope, you've still got like 20+ hours of compelling story, more creative and intense dungeons, and new abilities and secrets to dig up. Talk about a pleasant surprise, that was the moment this game really blew me away. Just a reminder that this game is $10 lol.

Now I had seen a handful of people saying that the game was good but sometimes felt unfinished, and I didn't feel that way at all, until I found out that I've been playing on the very recent 1.3 update for my whole time with this game. Looking at the gargantuan amount of content added through updates, especially this 1.3 update, I can sort of understand that sentiment. I don't think the game would've been unfinished per se, but hot damn is there so much to do in this game after all the content that's been added, you are in for a treat!

Lastly, I just want to hit a few of the last big points that really made this game so great to me. First of all, oh my god, the music! It goes off! Please do yourself and the devs a favor and buy the OST bundle, it's so worth it. I can guarantee you that anybody who's played this game to completion will have the Daemon's Dive theme stuck in there head probably all the time. Also, the world building and lore was honestly way cooler than I was expecting, and I don't mean that as a dig at the devs, it's more that I really dig the way they scatter things around for you to piece together. Speaking of which, hidden rooms! There's a lot, there's even some hidden rooms in hidden rooms! Hidden items! And a vast majority of the time, you're gonna find some juicy lore in those bad boys, it's pretty fun to piece the story together on your own as you mentally sort events and rationalize and understand contradictions and how the perspectives are skewed, etc. And if you're ever lost, the devs and community in the steam forums are pretty quick and very helpful about answering any questions you might have, including some helpful spoiler free nudges in the right direction! To top everything off, you've got a very fun NG+ mode with painful Bastion style modifiers and even a randomizer mode! That being said, take your time on your first go to just soak everything in, there's really no rush so just have a good time and learn everything you can throughout your adventures!

So in summary, yeah I recommend this game obviously. It came out of left field for me personally, but it's a super solid dungeon crawlin', baddy brawlin', lore readin' romp with waifus if that's your thing, and otherwise a solid story with fun and surprisingly fleshed out characters with a rockin soundtrack. Again, it's only $10, but I'd say do yourself and the devs a favor and buy the OST bundle!

Very very cool so far! Movement is tight as ♥♥♥♥ and it's very fun to keep combos going with the combat system being just as fluid but simple to grasp as the movement. You can definitely feel the Nuclear Throne-esque sound design coming from Joonas Turner and it is rad. Also digging the unlock trees and gun variety that really change the way you're playing run to run, even if it's not as crazy as some other games of the same breed (yet?).

Accessibility options are also pretty good, notably the ability to change the game speed and convert the pixelated text into a normal HD font. There's also the ability to change button prompts between Nintendo, Xbox, and PS4 which is very much appreciated.

So far there's only 3 zones, but the game is definitely fun enough to recommend it in the state that it's in. Overall a very rad game!

This game is pretty rad, even if the humor and stuff is almost always off the mark. The gameplay is very much like ratchet and clank meets tony hawk and I spent a long time just zipping around the city. Definitely looking forward to more stuff from Insomniac as always.
