Turn based Yakuza. This does not look like the most obvious choice for the kind of game it is, but it works pretty well.

Like you would expect from a JRPG, there is grinding involved, but its not the usual kind of grind you would expect. This game does not have as much depth as some more traditional JRPGs, it has all the primary things you would expect from a JRPG in it but that is about it.

There is some good sense of progression when you get to beat bosses without challenge because you did the grinding, and figuring out what works the best against a certain kind of enemy, what enemies give the most XP, what enemies to fight, which ones to avoid etc. While the turn based combat is here is far from perfect, it works for the game, and is a welcome replacement for the button mashing the series had this far.

Performance wise, the game runs fine, 1440p on a 1060 at medium, it looked nice and played nice, except some fancy effects during combat and a few cutscenes made the FPS tank. The only major issue is the aliasing in the game - blinking lights, shimmering edges are very noticeable. So much so that you might even get used to lights in the distance blinking all the time.

What I think most people play Yakuza for however are, characters and story. This is the same series it has always been, maybe better. Our main character this time is not as obtuse as Kiryu, which is great. There are a lot more characters this time, and they all have small subsections in the main story which do feel a little long winded but tie in nicely to the main one. The sub-stories are nice and full of content, really nice and they often catch you off-guard.

Like the previous Yakuza games, there are little bits of knowledge and lessons about friendship sprinkled through which have a charm of their own. In the end, it is still the same amazing story you would expect from a Yakuza game.

♥♥♥♥♥ great. Buy it.
