So . . . this is a tough one for me. I'm NOT a twitch gamer. I thought the idea of being able to mash buttons in time to my own music was a cool idea and the graphics and art style of Melody's Escape speak to me. That said, I enjoy . . . harder music. Not death or speed metal (or really metal at all), but more of the post-hardcore, Vans Warped Tour band list variety. And herein lies my dilemna.

The game itself is fun and pretty to look at, in it's minimalistic way. But, with my own music imported, something feels . . . off. I don't understand the reasoning (or even the rhythm) behind when I am to hit, tap, hold, etc the buttons for my songs. It feels random, and worse so: off-beat. Now, I understand that this is likely largely in part due to my music selections. But, that's what I want to play.

When I tap on beat to the song and I get offsync somehow with "error" or "too late" messages, I get a little frustrated. (BTW, I've been a drummer for over 25 years so I'm perfectly capable of keeping time). I know it's a game, and ultimately the score doesn't really matter, but to me - this does.

So, in conclusion, I enjoy the game in small doses, but until I get the feeling of actually playing my music (instead of a random level kinda-sorta timed to my music in parts, possibly . . . maybe . . .) I cannot recommend it. At least not at full price.

  • Cool minimalistic art style
  • Ability to import songs saved onto your HD
  • Syncopation and timing issues that just feel "off" (at times)
  • Seemingly randomized levels (at times)

An interesting, fun, goofy and not-as-sexual-but-still-has-some-so-don't-worry prequel/look into a day in the life of your favorite catgirls from Nekopara Vol 1 and 2.

Very short , linear story.
Excellent art and animations.
Fully voiced (in Japanese, for what that's worth).
Easy achievements.
Option slider for "chest bounciness".

I'm only slightly embarassed that I played and enjoyed it.

If you like the sillier VNs and are a fan of Vol 1 and 2, then I recommend grabbing this when it's on sale.

The 39 Steps is (as most have previously stated) an interactive novel, and NOT a game. There are some elements of interactivity in the form of mouse clicks and even "drawing" patterns with the mouse from time to time, but that's about it. That said, if you know going in you're going to read and occasionally watch/listen to a story, you shouldn't be disappointed.

For the most part, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the story. I would sit down and play one of the 20 or so "chapters" at a time. Having them broken down into 10-15 minute chunks like this helped and allowed me to play at my own pace. The art is very well done, though there is really no actual animation. The voice acting is well done and the ambient sounds and music are a plus.

Being that the story is set prior to WWI (and that I'm American and this is set in the U.K.), some of the dialects and terminology were a bit tricky to follow, but not so much that it detracted form the story itself. Other than that, my only real complaint is that the ending seems somewhat . . . abrupt. I certainly won't spoil anything, but I felt that another couple minutes of gametime could have wrapped it up a little better.

All-in-all, the playthrough was an enjoyable experience and I'm looking forward to The Story Mechanic's next project.

My personal rating for what it is: 7.5/10

Amazing story telling that certainly stirs an emotional response as you play. My only minor complaint is that much of the time, it's more of an interactive story than a game. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and never felt stuck or frustrated. All-in-all, a 9/10.
