The Evil Within is a criminally underrated and awesome stealth action-horror game that deserves way more love than it got. It's by no means a perfect game as some questionable design decisions and frustratingly tough sections can hamper what is a really fantastic and intense experience that's full of intense, challenging fights as well terrifying stealth and chase segments. It's a game I've found action-packed and terrifying on both an atmospheric and mechanical level. Word of warning; yes Shinji Mikami worked on this and Resident Evil 4 is amazing but don't bother trying to play this game like that because it's a VERY different game - no roundhouse kicks and uppercuts here. This is a Steam review so bullet points for days:

Pros:
*Awesome psychological story - mysterious, weird and creepy, not everything is told, you'll have to piece a good bit of it yourself.
*Fantastic gameplay - from fighting hordes of monstrosities with meaty gunplay to sneaking around insta-kill bosses looking to find the perfect strike to frightening, heart-pounding chase scenes against a handful of unkillable horrors.
*Well-rounded mechanics - Whether you prefer stealth, combat or being a coward, the game design around all aspects is nicely balanced, making all play styles possible (I like my shooty bang bang approach).
*Very challenging - from waves of powerful monsters to difficult stealth (the stealth really is that hard, I've never cleared a single section with pure stealth in both of my playthroughs - it's fun trying though), this game never pulls a single punch.
*Looks beautiful - this runs on idTech 5, the same engine as RAGE and that looked like arse; need I say more?
*Disgustingly beautiful art style - I love grotesque and macabre monsters and locations in my horror games a lot.
*Item management - you may have guns and other doohickeys but ammo and health items are severely limited, you're always running out of ammo which forces players to adapt to the situation via stealth, running away or hiding.
*Good level variety - It's not always from A to B, sometimes you'll have to survive waves of enemies or explore an area to solve puzzles or you'll be forced through a tough scenario against an enemy that cannot die; it's not afraid to throw player into new scenarios around the core gameplay and that makes each chapter distinct from each other. Chapter 9 even comes with a call back to Resident Evil 1 with its own miniature Spencer Mansion with a great deal to explore.
*Awesome soundtrack and sound design - very reminiscent of Silent Hill 1, tons of creepy industrial banging, horrific moans, lovely weapon sounds and all that jazz. You'll be surprised how much the music can do for those chase scenes.
*Great length - I'm not one of those gamers who believe every game has to be a whole saga but 15-20 hours on your first run is pretty great and necessary for fleshing out the world and characters, it took me about 16 on my first run and 13 on my second and I prefer a combat approach; it will definitely take much longer if you focus on stealth, fleeing and hiding.
*Highly replayable - new game+ is arguably better than the first run now that you have the necessary upgrades where you can just enjoy yourself the second time through. You will also unlock new weapons and difficulty modes.
*Fair price point - £15/$20 for this hidden gem is a steal and definitely worth the asking price, the DLC is very cheap too and I have heard it's good stuff.

♥♥♥♥:
*Frustrating to begin with - with a mimumum damage output, flimsy health bar, tiny ammo pool, pathetic melee and the sprinting ability of a 100 year old disabled granny; starting out without the upgrades can be VERY rough indeed.
*Unavoidable grab attacks - a lot of enemies have grab attacks and they are completely unavoidable when you're right up in their face (it's very easy otherwise) as the attack frames are way to unforgiving and you are unable to break free from the Haunted that carry weapons, forcing you to suffer massive damage.
*One-hit kills - when done right with the proper amount of wind up and plenty of opportunity to dodge, they can make certain enemies and situations terrifying and they are for the most part; however there are parts of the game where they're way too hard to avoid.
*♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crossbow arseholes are massive ♥♥♥♥♥ - probably the worst enemy design I've seen in a game for a very long time, certain Haunted can be tough with hard-to-deal with weaponry and armour but none of them beat the crossbow guys who can shoot sticky explosive bolts into you with terrifying accuracy and rate of fire and will effectively try to stun-lock you until you're dead. Utterly atrocious - thankfully you'll encounter roughly six or so in the entire game.
*Is this game Haunted? - There's a good number of fun and interesting such as The Keeper, AlterEgo, the invisible dudes and one particularly famous monster that all sadly gets hardly any game time at all as there's way too much of a focus on the common Haunted enemies, they're fun but it's like how Lost Planet 2 focused on dudes with guns rather than the awesome Akrid.
*Tricks And Traps - this game is FULL of traps and unlike Resident Evil 4, Tango Gameworks made them fiendishly difficult to see this time around - from explosive trip mines in a dark village at night to bear traps completely hidden in murky water full of poo. It gets really mean sometimes.
*Horror is subjective - different things scare us and The Evil Within is probably not going to scratch that itch if you're looking for a true horror game to scare the daylights out of you; it's called action horror for a reason.
*Performance - while the game runs at 60fps the vast majority of the time for me, there are points where it very rarely drops or suffers from microstutter; my rig is pretty beastly so expect plenty of hiccups on weaker hardware.

I totally recommend The Evil Within wholeheartedly - just know that it might be a rough ride on your first time through and you'll probably have even more fun in new game+. To me it nails the action and the horror the vast majority of the time and backed up with an engaging, crazy story makes it all the more entertaining and is definitely a go to for me whenever I feel up for a good ol' action horror. If you're into the more recent Resident Evil games including 4, Dead Space, Cold Fear and any other game in the action horror genre then The Evil Within is absolutely worth playing.

Doom, in my opinion, is probably the best game of the current generation. A game that's so bold and confident in what it does that its old school 90s design looks and feels new after well over a decade of FPS trying to be "realistic". While very few FPS managed to make the best use of modern design elements, most of them in my opinion are dull, boring, have aged poorly and are doing nothing other than following a trend set by the popularity of Call of Duty, especially when a game in a franchise decided to follow suit with that old fad imlookingatyourresistance2andfear3. Those games have easily become stale and it's about time we finally had a game that shook the genre up after it went stagnant for years with modern military crap and along with titles like Overwatch, Doom has absolutely shook up the FPS genre with almost universally grand results. This is a steam review so I'm going to keep it simple by breaking it down into pros and ♥♥♥♥:

Pros:
- Tons of content; lengthy and replayable campaign, fun multiplayer and a robust level editor with more free stuff on the way
- Excellent, fast-paced and meaty gunplay
- Awesome weapons and alternative fires
- Incredible balance, every weapon, enemy and map just feels so right - it's a game that delivers the perfect amount of punch, challenge and reward
- No story; it's just you, your gun and lots of demons from hell
- NO REGENERATING HEALTH, I love health packs <3
- Hyperspace arsenal; you can carry every single weapon in the campaign and most snapmap levels and you'll have to find ammo scattered throughout the levels
- No ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hitscan enemies - everything is fair and can be dodged, it's a game that truly values player skill
- Badass and unique demons to fight
- Great level design in campaign and multiplayer
- Amazing visuals
- Beautiful aesthetic, the dark oppressive environments makes the action feel even more awesome
- Superbly optimised and runs like a dream, I've never dropped below 60fps once
- Amazing soundtrack, very cool reinterpretations of the classic Doom music
- Lore is deep and engaging and full of references from previous Doom games
- Upgrades that actually matter (no boring stat boosts here)
- Lots of fun secrets
- Very fun and well-balanced MP (the balance was busted on launch and has been through a lot of tweaking and it feels great to play now)
- Snapmap is excellent and has a lot of UGC to play with friends be it deathmatch or campaign levels or something truly creative and awesome like how someone recreated Tetris for example
- Epic player customisation for both multiplayer and snapmap, lots of armors and colours to choose from
- id are incredibly supportive and add new free content on an almost monthly basis
- The DLC model for selling maps is actually genius, while you only get the cosmetics, weapons and demons everyone else can also play the DLC maps as long as at least one person in a public or private has bought the DLC; if you buy the DLC then you're also buying those maps for others to play on too so there is no community split
- And just so much more, there's way too much going on in this game and the campaign is worth the asking price alone

♥♥♥♥:
- Occasional unskippable cutscene in the campaign (but not arcade mode), they're thankfully few and far between but they do suck
- Snapmap could do with more content and functionality but it's getting there
- The multiplayer may not appeal to those looking for classic arena shooter action
- Loadouts in multiplayer, I'm ok with them but I would like a separate classic mode that adds weapons as pickups
- No mod support, I wish id adds this even if it's the final update in this however long game plan
- DLC is too pricey for my liking and I feel that the multiplayer Cacodemon sold in Hell Followed is too OP, just lower their health to about 350
- Bots have been added but they are wonky and only work on non-DLC maps in DM and TDM only; hopefully id can make them playable on all maps and modes.
- This may or may not be a ♥♥♥ but for some people, performance is almost unplayable for others but it's ran perfectly for me since launch albeit with very rare crashing; it's unpredictable so bear this in mind before buying
- Some people may not enjoy the glory kills but I personally love them because they are short but sweet
- I've noticed people have complained about the arenas in the campaign but they are blissfully short, full of intense action, great design and you're never kept in them for any more than a couple of minutes at a time, which is unlike other "old school" FPS that keep you fighting in the same area for upwards of 5-10 minutes imlookingatyoushadowwarrior2013yabastard
- And... Well, I can't really think of anymore ♥♥♥♥ because Doom 2016 does so many thing so damn right

Needless to say, I love Doom to absolute death and just like previous Doom games, including Doom 3, it quickly became one of my favourite games of all time and that purity of vision to focus entirely on the awesome action and cutting out needless fluff such as a stupid story and a moody ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ protogonist that nobody cares about was an excellent design decision. Doom is fantastic just the way it is and trying to add a "deep" and "emotional" story to that will only drag the game down because it doesn't need it and that was one of the downfalls of Wolfenstein: The New Order (another id property developed by Machine Games, ex-Starbreeze) and even though that story was fantastic, I feel it really affected the awesome action in a stop-start kind of way.

Doom hits every nail on the head on how to make an excellent FPS and a fantastic reboot as it defies the stale and dated tenants established by modern FPS and proves that 90s FPS design is absolutely timeless, there's a good reason why classic Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, Blood, Shadow Warrior Original and what-not are considered to be some of the best FPS games of all time and while Doom 2016 borrowed certain elements from modern FPS, it still brought that classic 90s FPS design foward into the modern day and is truly a triumph in modern FPS game design. Doom 2016 is absolutely a must buy and I urge anyone who's debating to get this game to buy it as soon as possible because you're missing out on an amazing title otherwise.

Now, I'll be the first to say but I actually LOVED Dusk 12. It's a crap game, there's no denying that - it is a really bad first person shooter but that badness is something special compared to a lot of other crap first person shooters. Orion Games have a way with developing games. While what they have made is almost universally crap, there's a huge dose of special charm to it that a lot of other bad games just can't seem to replicate. It's adorable and hilarious how it tries to be a good game, the dialogue is hilarious, the voice acting is laughable, the story is ridiculous especially with its WTF twist ending and the cheesy music that plays throughout - there really is a lot to love here. But as I look at what's been made here, I can tell love was put into the game, while the developer's incompetence speaks for itself you can tell they wanted Dusk 12 to go somewhere or at the very least, gain some kind of cult following. And I can safely say, I loved this game - had a smile on my face the whole way through and made me laugh quite a few times. And being interested in weird, obscure games, this was a must buy for me the second I saw it.

It's a Steam review so for those who are thinking about buying, I'll make a list of pros and ♥♥♥♥ for you;

Pros
- Fun, competent gunplay
- Funky enemy types
- Plenty of variety in level design all throughout
- Lots of enemies
- More akin to old school FPS
- Hilariousness all around (As stated above)
- Cheesy music

♥♥♥♥
- Horrid visuals
- Very hard to understand what's going on in the story
- A few sections are annoying or confusing (Thankfully they don't take too long to figure out)
- Level design is confusing at times
- Gorin sections can be a pain, especially when dealing with the cat-monkey mutants things
- If you want nothing but gold in your games, you'll despise this

The game can be beaten is 3-5 hours so it's a very short ride but I ride I certainly don't regret - just know that depending on your tastes in games; your mileage will greatly vary. But it's easily one of the best worst games I've ever played; almost reaches Deadly Premonition levels of so-bad-it's-good but it's not quite there.

A bloody great game, Painkiller: Hell and Damnation is a short, but very sweet old school FPS. However, being a HD remake/sequel/thingy you'd expect all of the original content right? Well for some reason, the developer or publisher decided that a lot of the original content from Painkiller: Black Edition has been cut to be sold as DLC or were just never remade which is sleezy and frankly makes it a rather pricey investment to get all of the content unless it's on sale. Would I buy it? Yeah I would because while the content you get is damn awesome as it is, I want it all and more even if it means I have to buy something that should have been there in the first place. This is a Steam review so let's do the TL;DR stuff.

Pros:
*Old school, bunnyhopping, demon blasting fun - a helluva game to play
*Tons of replayability - playing through levels, beating your high score, getting all the tarrot cards and more
*Lots of achievements - while I think achievements are arbitrary, at least they are fun to get here and there's a ton
*Awesome and creative weapons - a gun that fires stakes, a sawblade with a weird laser thing, etc, awesome stuff
*Plenty of enemies - a ton of enemies to fight and there's a lot of variety here; skellingtons, demon clowns, etc.
*Huge boss monsters - creative boss fights, some are better than others and a lot of mini-bosses too
*RIP AND TEAR - guts, blood, viscera; just everything everywhere and it's glorious
*Amazing art design - the visuals are lovely with a wonderful art style to boast, looks like a metal album cover in motion

♥♥♥♥:
*Controller support - the controller support is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ beyond belief, do not bother with a controller
*Minor framerate and stutter issues on high end rigs - people with weaker machines might experience more of this
*Low-res textures and models - certain elements were clearly taken from Black Edition and look noticeably outdated
*DLC-galore - a lot of the original content has been cut up as DLC and the pricing doesn't help neither
*Weak workshop support - it has workshop content, but a very pitiful amount; would be lovely for mappers to fix that
*Disappointing to Painkiller fans - the expansions were apparently horrible but this remake/sequel is a sin to big fans on the DLC aspect alone, clearly made for people new to the franchise

Overall, it's a bloody good game - a brilliant game in my opinion and I would love to play more and produce Workshop content for the game (If I'm any good at it of course) but that DLC issue and performance problems would be a massive turn-off for people looking to buy this game. Make your own choice and whether you want it or not.

Blinding Dark is an immensely short first person horror game clocking around about 2.5 hours if you're not getting stumped or killed constantly. The game is fun and charming to begin with as it's going for a very Clive Barker's Undying style of gameplay as well as some of the funny writing in a specific journal entry citing that the main character might have ♥♥♥♥ his pants so that was pretty amusing. Things seem alright if somewhat derivitave from the get-go (You lost you memory, in some spoopy place, etc, etc, we've seen it before) but as you get further and further into the game, things start to take a downward spiral from the confusing, to the annoying, to the outright frustrating and then to the utterly disappointing. I like the game in a weird charming way but it doesn't get that 'So bad that it's good' vibe like it had in the beginning as at the end it had more of a 'I feel rather disappointed now' kind of vibe. But I'll break it down to pros and ♥♥♥♥ because TL;DR amirite?

Pros:
- A refreshing take on the rather dull first person indie horror game
- Weapons to fight monsters
- Some interesting monster and weapon designs, taking from different folklores across the world
- Dark, gothic atmosphere
- Has plenty of old school elements, running around collecting random items is quite fun
- First person platforming is actually not bad, utilizing the sprint and jump keys properly can take you far
- Some fairly unique weapons, ranging from the standard revolver up to a large shield to deflect enemy projectiles
- Voice acting is alright, but sometimes it's hilarious
- Fighting enemies does have strategy as you can cancel and stagger their attacks with a well-timed swing or shot rendering them vulnerable, very rare for these indie horror games
- Easy achievements for those who crave them

♥♥♥♥:
- Repetitive levels, pretty much everywhere looks the same all throughout the game
- ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ enemies, enemies can hit you seemingly at random when you're clearly out of range
- Very small hitboxes, you will miss plenty of revolver shots and you will hate yourself for it
- Some weapons are useless and an absolute joke, certain weapons work for certain enemies but sometimes they bug out and the final weapon is terribly underpowered and doesn't even work on the typical grunts
- The Doppleganger, you will hate this guy to your very core as he's the most ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ enemy who is impossibly fast and can hit you from literally anywhere with a stupendous damage output and he WILL kill you but unlike all other enemies he will permanantly steal mana from the player which will piss you off
- The sprint mechanic is stupid, it's the classic "player has to stop moving to catch their breath" kind of sprinting which should never be the case and wastes the time of players and ruins the pacing of the game and it will happen all the time unless you exploit it easily by sprinting sideways or backwards
- The story is extremely thread-bare and you will find yourself not giving a single ♥♥♥♥, I don't care about stories in games but it's a horror game, it has to have some intrigue in the story
- The final boss isn't even a boss - it's basically an arena where you fight hordes of enemies you have been fighting throughout the whole game with a great, big spoopy monster in the background (Although it does look pretty cool)
- The ending is perhaps the least satisfying ending in gaming history, sure it's going for this whole episodic thing but it just ends with blank text like an NES game saying "Conglaturation!!! A Winner is You!" and then kicks you right back to the menu - RIVETING!
- Only one difficulty called "Buttface", that's not what it's called but it's what I call it because it only has a single difficulty with no name
- 2.5 hours is far too short for the majority of people
- And finally for a 2 hour experience where there's pretty much no need to go back and play through it again especially since you will most likely get every single achievement in that one sitting without needing to even think about it

It's a game with a ton of charm and had such a promising concept that it could have been so much more but sadly it's a game that falls flat on it's arse from a 10ft drop to a concrete pavement and you'll feel really disappointed when the game finally comes to an insultingly abrupt close. Though if there will be an ACT 2 then I would love to see if the devs made some much needed improvements to really flesh the entire game out - there's a lot of potential here and I love my horror FPS a LOT. So yeah, there you have it, my pointless review on Blinding Dark which won't be read by anyone ever :D
