This review has gone from upvote to downvote and back up again. Everytime they do a major release they break stuff but also improve things. With 2.0 and the only DLC it's probably the last major update or content that is going to be released, it's probably safe now for anyone that hasn't played it yet. Its well worth your time and money. A lot of effort went into the game.

If you get the DLC, i'd recommend you dont skip the basegame content.

Story is nice enough, and you get a real added layer to the story by reading the documents scattered around. Gameplay itself starts off a bit rough, but as soon as you gain some powers it's nice and zippy, though the enemy damage is quite hefty and you get some cheap shot deaths (if that is a blocking issue for you, you can always turn on some modifiers to make it easier). Level structure is very metroidvania, as you unlock more abilities and clearances the interconnected level opens up in more ways and you get access to locations you previously couldn't.

Should run you atleast 40 hours to complete everything.

They sold the season pass for quite a premium and delivered very weak content for it. Now they're charging more money, despite not being upfront about the fact that the first season pass wouldn't cover all content.

Typical 2K bull****

I'm pretty jaded on video games lately, and I usually switch off after 20min when the novelty wears off. But this got me playing for hours, so it must be doing something right. Outside Parvati's questline I never had the idea my conversation options were ones I would never use myself. And it wasn't a toss up between Capt. Picard or Dr. Evil either. And that is usually something that is an instant turn-off in story heavy games for me. None of the qualms people have with forced politics are true unless you engage in it. And Obsidian gave you both the option to ignore their advances, berate them or if you're feeling particularly annoyed at a person, to flatout shoot them. Now when is the last time you got to do that, hm?

As for the people mad about EGS, some of the most hypocritital and dumb arguments can be heard from the people touting this. Call it forceful marketing, but it means money gets diverted for games like this. And do you really want a monopoly on a games front? Aren't these the same people who were bashing steam for not cleaning their store from assetflips and pure hentai smut? Well, now you've got a choice outside of Steam. The only gripe I have with the plethora of storefronts is the system overhead it has and the fact they have to launch the entire storefront in order to launch a game. The UPLAY store can be seen gobbling up 20% of your CPU's resources at times. If they could just release a lightweight service that only deals with the DRM when you try to launch a game, that would go a big way against my issues with the storefronts. Maybe it's something developers can ask for?

EDIT: Have to say, eventually the novelty DID run out. Still an OK game. Just try not to 100% complete it, it will become stale before you finish it.

Eventually you really grow tired of the ways the game tries to deliberately waste your time. And whereas I had some fun moments on Odyssey, mainly due to the better voice actors, this one evoked no emotion out of me.

Couldn't manage to finish it before being bored to tears. I think this also concludes my purchase of "Ubisoft Game™" in the near future, as they all follow the same formula these days.

This remaster leaves a lot to be desired from a technical standpoint.
So from what I can quickly gather within the two hour window (as i'm refunding, unfortunately), my verdict is this:

What they improved:
- Increased LOD, meaning you will get less apparent asset pop-in in front of your face, it now happens more in the background. However, since they clearly didn't update the engine, the reason this was decreased in the first place is apparent by the drastic drop in performance and asset-streaming hickups during gameplay. Meaning this results in visible stutters and subpar framerates where a moderate amount of geometry is present (town).

- Increased Texture detail, but this is borked by the fact that they didn't update the AF slider, and it looks like 4x at best at the highest setting. Ground textures look blurry still, as a result. You have to force 16x in the Nvidia control panel to get it to actually look better, instead of just running worse.

Visual quality difference.

Here's a screenshot of the old game in Gorhart, with a 2x supersample and 16x AF forced in the Nvidia control panel.

Here's a screenshot of the 'new' game in Gorhart, with a 2x supersample and 16x AF forced in the Nvidia control panel. Other than a slight increase in texture quality, I cannot see much difference other than the difference in time-of-day and maybe some additional bloomyness.

So the performance then?

Seems to be very poor, most likely due to the engine not being designed to handle the increase in LOD / Draw distance and asset streaming (textures). It stutters significantly more than the original game, and the framerate is 1/5th of the original. In Gorhart I get 220-250fps in the old game. The new game it can dwindle to the 50's.

Here's a quick plot:

And the original (with a 140fps cap I use for freesync, but uncapped it's 220-250)

Verdict:
It's not a real remaster, they just Tweaked the engine a bit to go a bit beyond the original console settings in terms of LOD, and added most likely the original texturework that was downscaled for the consoles. It doesn't look much better and it runs significantly worse. And since I have the original, I'd much rather just replay that. Sad.

Played on:
Ryzen 2600X 4.0ghz
GTX 1080 2ghz
16GB 3200-CL16

EDIT:
So I just realised that they actually removed the ability to buy the old game on Steam, and are only selling this botched version to players. So people can't actually buy the old, but still working game on steam anymore...

Despite the padding that wasn't really necessary to hold up the runtime, and my general dislike for AAA games, I tried this one out and was pleasantly surprised. The DLC do finish the story, so the basegame might feel a little empty with respects to the ending.

Just buy the ultimate edition during a sale to get the complete game at a steep discount.

The audiomix in Halo:Reach is so abysmally bad that you can't even tell when an enemy has thrown a grenade, something that was a very distinct sound back in the days. It sounds like your speakers are in an empty room, nextdoor. How did this get through QC, and why isn't it fixed already.

Would I recommend it? Yes, it's a comfy little game that despite the rough edges manages to keep you playing due to a fun gameplay loop. I would characterize this game as a mix between Beyond Good & Evil and Metroid Prime. In fact, one of the bossfights was almost a copy of Omega Pirate.

+Runs exceptionally well, 1440p >120fps on a GTX 1080. No hitching or stuttering. Well done for a Unity game.
+Not too cheap to not allow you to cheese your way up to some area's you would've needed power-ups to get to. That's old skool :D
+Despite the metroidvania elements, the amount of backtracking is tolerable.
+BGE and Metroid Prime are my favorite games, so it sharing a bunch of elements from those games made it quite enjoyable.
+I liked the detail where you get a icon on the floor where you're about to land. 3D platforming has always suffered from a lack of depth perception, though it could've been used a bit better. As it only shows the static point directly below your toon, not a predictive point that alters based on controls. But it's a neat concept anyway.
+If the pressure isn't on (see negative point) the controls are very fluent.

+- Graphics are a bit dated, specifically the texturework, though it's a Unity-made indie game. I'm not going to fault it much for that.
+- Hitting a wall in the game where you have to collect x-amount of orbs shattered suspension of disbelief quite somewhat.

-Some levels are a bit masochistic. Which is to the detriment of the comfy vibe the game has otherwise. Maps like "well of shadows" had me ranting out loud to get passed it. When you increase the difficulty that much and you're not nintendo, some of the rough edges become razor sharp, if you know what I mean.
-No rebindable keys due to a "bug" that is not being fixed by the developers.
-You can easily get stunlocked by certain enemies.

EDIT: lol I only just read the description, it actually says "made by creators of metroid prime". You can tell I played that game to death.
