Aside from the in depth tactics, and fun progression, two things really elevate this game for me. One: the writing. It's truly what brings the exploration of the games' concepts alive. Secondly, its the sound design. Waiting for the audio cue of a weapon hit can turn your stomach or elevate your excitement, depending on whether the victim is one of your Battle Brothers or those who stand against them.

A great visit back to the old days of DnD. The camping/party system is fun, and ever journey really feels like an adventure. The rules are thick, and navigating smart choices for building your character can be a little confusing if you are unfamiliar with pen and paper DnD, and even then there is no guarantee. I've never played pen and paper pathfinder, but I remember a long time ago a game came out called Temple of Elemental Evil. It was DnD 3.0 and was released right around the time 3.5 came out. How frustrating to be stuck in the old rules for such a fun game! Pathfinder rules kick ass and are a huge improvement to DnD.

The setting is great, the NPCs are great and interresting, and the meta game of running a kingdom adds a very nice dimensionality to what is otherwise a deep and tactical dungeon crawler.

Lots of polish and it's only $30! Swing a large sword side to side cutting off multiple heads at once. Summon huge gouts of flame to send ratmen and chaos cultists ablaze.

Each character has a ton of different weapons. There is a lot of progression to be made. The voice acting is all great and often hilarious.

Calling this game a Civ clone doesn't really do it justice. It falls shy of Civ's greatness, but brings plenty to the table that civilization can't touch. My favorite thing that stands out from this release is the style. No faction is cookie cutter, compared to say, Heroes of Might and Magic. In that series, you have the noble knight guys, the elf guys, the undead guys, the demon guys, etc. In Endless Legend, each faction borrows from some of the tropes but does a lot to break away from them, also. For instance, where you might expect to find a "Wizard Faction", Endless Legend grants you the Ardent Mages, a cabal of wizards who unleash their magic through personal torment, and who learned their powers in the grip of those who once enslaved them. To maintain their power, they torture themselves. Or perhaps the "Noble Knight" faction who is actually the Broken Lords, a society of ghosts locked in empty suits of armor. They harvest the worlds magic resource, "dust", to stay alive. That is, until it's discovered they can gain power much more easily by drinking the souls of living beings. The game takes the keen style and applies it to every aspect of the game. Even the hex-by-hex descriptions and bonuses are intriguing.

The gameplay stands up, also. It doesn't get bogged down as much in the later stages as Civ does, but at the same time setting goals and acheiving them for your empire seems cumbersome. This is partially due to the increasing frequency of Winter, which comes and lasts for a few turns and first, and then becomes more common as the game progresses. It's an interesting design decision, but generally halves just about everything you do, from movement to land bonuses. I'm not sure the game is better off with it.

I'm still playing, and if you aren't already, you should start.

Brutal decisions to be made. An RPG that breaks the current trends, and it's glorious.
