Early Access Review
Fans of Stardew Valley or Graveyard Keeper will likely see this game promoted to you, as it was for me. While the game play is similar to these games, particularly to Graveyard Keeper, there is no plot. Unless you count capitalism as your end goal. Stardew Valley had Grampa's Ghost, Graveyard Keep had a mystery to solve. Travellers Rest has no story, no larger goal to progress towards. You simply make make things to sell, to make slightly better quality things to sell. That's it.

Maxing out recipes and talents is the only way to mark your progress but it's so shallow that it wont keep you in the game for long. Give this one a miss until there is more to keep you entertained in the game.

As a crochety old witch, you must collect the souls of the wicked (or morally corrupt) for a demonic goat, in order to save the life of a mystery maiden, who is doing her best Snow White impression in a cave in your garden.

The story gets a bit dark and twisty, with the morally bankrupt selling their family for a harvest or feeding workers to the pigs when they are too old to work, so you never question if it's right to be out there reaping souls. This is the kind of "just desserts" we love to see dished up to these kinds of disreputable characters.

This crafting game was the right length to avoid the necessary reagent grind becoming repetitive and annoying. Plus, the portal system between locations keeps the "hiking back and forth for that one missing item you need to progress" quick and easy.

Definitely an entertaining distraction.

It's impossible not to get swept up in the life stories of the spirits you meet throughout the game. You'll have favourites, spirits you don't want to move on but who you need to say goodbye to in order to progress. The some of mini games could be a little tedious, but could could honestly do Giovanni's meteor shower on repeat. The music and visuals were stunning.

This game makes you think about the people you love who are no longer here, with a kind of fondness and longing for the stories you remember from their lives. You'll probably cry, or at least have a big lump in you throat frequently throughout this game. If you don't then you must be incredibly lucky that you haven't experienced the death of a loved one yet.

I was conflicted giving this a "no" recommendation. On the whole, it's great concept for a game and the artwork and design are beautiful. I think my biggest gripes come down to the length of the game, and how basic the game play is, versus the cost.

I had to restart my first game on day 13 due to a corrupt save file, and including that playtime I clocked in at 9.5 hours to play the game though once plus two thirds. I believe there are multiple endings, so the game is intended to be re-playable, but I absolutely flew through my do over game. Primarily because I could remember what most of the plants were. Other than figuring out clues on the map, a large part of this game is spent pouring over a book with botanical descriptions to help you identify plants. If you're familiar with the plants from previous play through's, it makes the game play pretty tedious.

I hoped this was going to keep me engaged for awhile, but there is probably only another 6 hours max left in the game trying for different endings. I expected to be playing for longer for the price of the game.
