Review from a sim racing esports driver (whatever that may be worth to you, it's not important but I guess some people might want to defend this game by suggesting I'm a bad driver or something):
This game is very cool in concept (I absolutely adored absolute drift) but the controls and, kinda sorta, the physics, let this game down big time.

In another review someone mentioned that the controls don't scale for speed, they get tankslappers, etc. From what I can tell that's not actually what the issue is, the issue is a lack of something called "self aligning torque." If you've ever drifted your mom's Nissan Sentra you'll notice that in the middle of the slide, your steering wheel will automatically countersteer as the tires follow the inertial path of the vehicle, and as the car straightens out, the steering wheel essentially aligns itself. This is a natural force that you use for any car that you're going to be using lots of oversteer, say on dirt or gravel, to turn the car, and in many cases you can kinda just let the car do all the work.

The problem with art of rally is this force doesn't exist in the game, meaning you have to do all the countersteering, and time it perfectly. If you countersteer for a fraction of a second too long, you get in a tankslapper. If you don't countersteer enough, it acts as if you're turning into the slide as opposed to letting the wheel self center.

Uninstalled after about 3 hours of gameplay. If you want a fun laid back arcade experience with elements of weight and realism (and rally cars), I recommend Forza Horizon 4 (or maybe 5 since that's coming out soonish.) In my opinion, the lack of this simple yet crucial physical mechanic in the steering makes the game simply not enjoyable and not worth playing.

Some may tell you it's a skill issue or that it's supposed to be a difficult game, but it's only difficult because you are fighting the poorly made controls, rather than the difficulties of driving a monster rally car or a technical rally course.

Cute 15 minute visual novel, well worth your time if you relate to it. Writing is very well done, I don't even usually like visual novels and I'd absolutely love to see a full version of this.

Only things I can think of that need improving are the artstyle, while I like the minimalist concept it could use some polishing, and it just needs more content to be something more than a cute 15 minute visual novel. I really hope we see this turn into a full project.

The connectivity issues have mostly gone away. There are still occassional disconnects, so the problem still exists. Of course people get upset about people not being upset about the things they're upset about, so I feel obligated to point out the fact that if you want to wait until everything has been completely evened out, I'd expect that to be finished by the end of september. Don't sue me if I'm wrong. Now on to the actual review.

Full disclosure: I'm brand new to the Monster Hunter series. Never touched this ♥♥♥♥ before, it's all brand new to me. Didn't even know it existed until the dunkey video.

Accessibility to Newcomers:
This is something I can comment on, and it'll probably tick some people off, but this game is very easy to get into. The controls aren't clunky, you just have to choose the right moment to attack because you can't cancel out of them (although in fairness the mouse acceleration is pretty bad, I just use a controller.) The hitboxes- well ok the hitboxes are pretty busted I'll give you that but it's not bad enough to make me not enjoy the game. As soon as you learn the core tactics to killing a monster, it applies to every monster in the game. When you first start playing and if you've never played a monter hunter game before you might struggle but if you don't get better at the game, well, that's on you. (git gud lol)

Performance:
Obviously I can't speak for everybody, but if your pc is a potato like mine, I'm happy to tell you that this game is very easy to run on low settings. My specs are:
-i5 4440
-gtx 750ti
-8gb RAM
If yours are similar, you'll be completely fine.
Also worth noting, some people have this problem and some people don't, I do, alt tabbing causes the game to throw an exception and crash in a very non-memory related way (probably related to the way they ported it.) Can't say for sure exactly what the problem is, but if you have double monitors a solution is to shift tab and use your second monitor for any other tasks you have going on. Otherwise, if you have this problem, just avoid alt tabbing because there's always a chance it'll crash when you tab back in. If you don't have the problem then uh, don't worry about it I guess.

Time/Money Investment (is it worth your money?):
Full disclosure: I didn't buy this game, I was gifted it.
My standard is one dollar per hour of gameplay is an acceptable investment. If you're looking for a game that will provide at least 60 hours of enjoyment, I can recommend. Unless you're prone to throwing your monitor out the window because you disconnect once every couple of days (that's how it is for me in US servers at least, can't speak for online experiences elsewhere) then this is a pretty safe buy.

Overall rating that shouldn't really mean anything to you but hey let's do it anyway:
7/10
It's not the type of game I'd obsess over but even as someone who doesn't care for whatever genre it's in I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I've had. Thanks capcom, very cool.
