Well... I was having a blast, over 40 hours in, until my inventory disappeared for no reason while I was in my own base (which was overgrown with dirt inside) and alt-tabbed out. I did not die. I am not in survival or permadeath... wow... Items in my inventory, gone. My jetpack still had the carbon in it, cargo still had two items... main inventory.. gone aside from the basics. All that money on wiring looms... hours of mined stuff. I don't even want to play any more, what if this happens again? Ugh, I wanted to give this a good score but this just soured me completely.

No death, not in multiplayer, normal mode, stuff just gone. Great...

If this never happened/s to you, fantastic! Enjoy the game, I was enjoying it. But this ONE major bug just destroyed my enjoyment. I don't want to put in hours to have it all just disappear. It was odd, it was just my main exosuit inventory and the modules on my ship were blinking even though all but two had been completed.

Before this issue... solid 7/10
Now... meh 4-5/10 having your stuff disappear is a terrible feeling and like I said, I don't know if anyone else experienced this but the fact that I did is enough for me. I don't even want to go back in and try to get those resources again.

If the issue never happens again... 6/10 - shouldn't have happened to begin with.

Get it but know what can happen inexplicably. Only recommending because it was a blast up to this point.

Mixed? How? One of the most breathtaking VR experiences I have ever had! Now I am no stranger to MMO type games and some of these complaints are just how MMOs play. Hands down a 10/10. It takes actual thought to get started in this game. The challenge is pretty high but the results of the seat time are incredible! I feel that gaming is for everyone but not every game is for everyone. This is one of those games, it is not for everyone. If you require breadcrumbs, definitely not the game for you. But that does not make this a bad game at all. The 'grind', yeah that is every game. You will grind something no matter what game you play that keeps a 'top score'.

This game has become the main content of my YouTube channel in less than a month. If you are a space type of person, this game is epic. Be warned, it is not all 'Star Trek' episodes, it is a lot of what happens between episodes. LOL

OK boys and girls, let's jump into Zero Caliber.

I have played the game off and on, some of it was livestreamed via my twitch channel {LINK VERWIJDERD}. After some bits in Co-Op and Solo, I can give the following impressions of this EARLY ACCESS title.

First things first, I feel that a lot of people misunderstand what early access is. It is a way to "pitch" a project to the actual market and gain market support to complete the project. Sometimes a Kickstarter is just that, a kickstart. These games need money to complete, especially games attempting the scale of what Zero Caliber is aiming for. Some think Beta testers get paid, well someone go tell Blizzard that because I have been in EVERY WoW Beta and a lot of closed beta's. Unless you work for the company you are not getting paid. Instead with Early Access the market has a chance to help fund and SHAPE the game being created. For many that feeling is worth the cost. Early Access games are "playable" but not finished. With that out of the way...

Zero Caliber is an ambitious title from XReal Games. These are the folks working on A-Tech Cybernetic. Using that title as an example of how this company approaches Early Access is valid. They are responsive and are constantly adding new content and fixing bugs. Even while Zero Caliber was under initial development these guys clearly kept up with the content and fixes for their initial offering. A-Tech Cybernetic, while it does have performance issues, has been steadily getting better, even in the performance arena. Given what they have delivered so far, this game is very exciting indeed.

Zero Caliber is aiming to take on the AAA aesthetics and gameplay of pancake titles like Call of Duty and it shows! This level of detail requires talent and XReal Games has that.

I have seen misc. complaints about things that are either expected or non-issues. For example, the complaining about having to interact in VR (they want a point and click interface to VR essentially) is a non-issue and shouldn't be a comment unless trolling was the point. Others are interesting to note. Unlimited Ammo, for example. I do not find this to be a problem. In some games they don't make you reload so the challenge is ammo management. In this game they give you the ammo, but the challenge is in knowing the mag limits and managing reloads. Similar challenge but a different mechanism. A mechanism that adds interaction to VR. In A-Tech you have limited ammo but not crazy limited and reloading is a swing of the arm, but that is a different game entirely. It is a swarming game with tons of enemies all at once. In a game like this that is tactical, you don't have swarms coming at you. You can think a bit more, plan a bit more and strategize more. Making reloading as the challenge a nice break from pancake gaming.

There are bugs. Well, duh. The game is Early Access and was JUST released this past Friday (9th). A lot of early access titles really hit their stride a month or two in. We start to see bugs fixed, gameplay improvements and more.

The AI, yeah, the AI is a problem BUT this is early access. What the AI currently is makes for a GREAT base to build on while literally watching players play. They can see what works and what doesn't. I have watched their AI in A-Tech improve over time and I expect to see the same here. That said, I love that they take cover and I am free to move around out of site for my advantage. For example, here is a clip. https://www.twitch.tv/lynxsavage/clip/DrabSpotlessLampNerfBlueBlaster I wanted to try getting on a roof top and sniping with my pistol (I prefer them because my IRL experience lately has been all pistols lol), I was able to do it AND still have the danger present. Then I was able to have a ball. https://www.twitch.tv/lynxsavage/clip/SmellyDrabSaladMrDestructoid

The weapons. I REALLY like how the guns feel in this game. The recoil feels nice. Aiming feels damn accurate. I love how ammo works. The gun I am holding is the ammo I pull. I would suggest thinking of a way to have the mag release on whichever controller is holding the gun (ambidextrous and I shoot more accurately with my left hand for distance and better with my right for closer as it is a strong hand so I can pull the trigger faster) so that would make things feel more "real" but who plays games for absolute reality? I sure don't! You get a nice range of weapons to earn, accessories to add etc.

Co-Op is where this game shines, so far. Having a buddy on your team to talk to, plan with and take over compounds with his just a joy. The AI falls to the wayside. We didn't care about the AI. We just had fun, that was the marker for me, "Can I hope in and just have fun?". Tossing mags (not that we need to) was just fun to do. Tossing guns to each other, equally fun. Had a buddy legit shoot a gun to my area for me.

The developers are working diligently to bring us PvP. PvP is expected sometime during Q1 2019 (2018 is almost done, keep in mind). PvP is what we REALLY want and is what will keep this game in the replayable slot. Again, this is shaping up to be the VR version of Call of Duty, I don't say that to give it hype. I say that to give an idea of the game type. You have missions, a campaign and multiplayer maps in which you have an arcadey tactical experience. Leader boards, ranks, unloackables, currency to buy more and trick out your loadout. Speaking of your loadout, you go to the armory, choose your guns and you enter the game with the guns you are holding. AWESOME way to handle loadouts differently.

The game is beautiful! Absolutely amazing to look at.

The game is not without its problems but given that this is just released early access, I will list them but NONE of them are game breaking or deal breaking frankly. AI, yes, the AI is bad but not terrible. The lock on 100% accuracy the AI has is odd given how stupidly they run. The 100% lock on accuracy should be toned down. Two Handed Weapon holding, this can be improved by using proximity to the trigger area (the area on the model that triggers the second hand holding the weapon) instead of having to be spot on when supporting a rifle or shotgun. Voice acting is not terrible, but A-Tech gave us more personality but given the type of game that is versus this, it is expected. A-Tech is story driven, but it would be nice to have more personality in the Zero Caliber characters. World holes, yes, they exist. They exist in even the most polished AAA game. When you find them, write to the dev so they can fix them. We are helping build a game here! So, participate in that process. If you are not that guy, early access is not for you. Just wait for the game to be completed. Most major dev houses take YEARS to finish a triple A title. These guys are allowing us to enjoy and help build the title over the course of development time. Finally, performance. If there is any complaint, I have about XReal titles, it is the performance. They spend an AMAZING amount of time making everything look delicious, it is a shame to have even a beast of a machine deal with reprojection or frame drops or general jitteriness. I point again to A-Tech. The performance was bad but has steadily improved. Right now, everything is smooth except my dang hands. LOL. Zero Caliber did not escape their performance quagmire. Currently I must turn anti-aliasing off and details to Med. I run a 1070, i7 7700k 4.2ghz, 32gb ram, SSD drives. So, my only BIG criticism to offer XReal at this stage of the game is performance needs help. A balance must be found between the absolute beauty of their titles and performance. If XReal conquers their performance issues, we will have an indie developer for VR that can rival the likes of Id.

I have read every review given so far and a lot of them are quite frankly, unfair and displays a basic misunderstanding of what Early Access is and what to expect from Early Access. Steam gives you the option to not show em.

***UPDATE: I have changed my recommendation after today's patch. This game went from being a chore to play to being a joy to play. They seem to have fixed the performance issue I speak of in my review literally within 24hrs. I said this patch needed to "happen tomorrow" and the devs have legit brought us a fix within 24hrs. Impressive, responsive, customer for life. Given I was able to continue without the crazniess of the performance, I can say that I want to see more of this game. It is not in Early access, so I expect that what we get is the alpha and omega of the story. I am looking forward to more chapters in this story if they decide to continue it with DLC. Yes it is short, but this is still not a deal breaker for the experience. I hope more is added as they sell more units. I can recommend this game as a purchase. It is a ton of fun, aside from the janky bow mechanics. If they fix the Bow, man... that is a bar being set.

As for the bow, I withheld judgement due to the performance issue. The Bow is jacked, you are better off in melee. I love the dark "Legend of Zelda" feeling from this game. It feels as I would expect Zelda to feel. You have hidden objects, explodable walls (most of those quintessential "Zelda" things are only seen once or twice so far though, unfortunately), sword and board, room crawling/discovery and a good story.

Among other things I would like to see improved, Shield storage. This should be able to be slung over your back. The belt, it really is too high and I do seem to hit it with arrows every now and then. It would be nice to be able to choose which side you store the weapons on but this is not a deal breaker in any way. They would be more quality of life oriented, nice to have type of stuff.

I am really glad they fixed the performance issue. I was anticipating this game and was excited to livestream it on opening day. It was disheartening to get it and have most of my commentary during the stream being about the poor performance. I cannot wait to restream it with this patch and let everyone know the speed of resolution to this problem.

Fun game, needs more gameplay hours. The puzzles were simple enough to solve quickly but good enough to extend gameplay somewhat. Definitely needs more story, but this is because what you gave us is good and we want more. Needs better bow mechanics, movement feels fine teleporting and trackpad. Needs shield storage.

Minor bugs such as dialogue repeating over and over again, getting stuck on doorways with free loco, hitting the belt are just that... minor. Hopefully they will get fixed but it is not enough to NOT recommend this game. Buy it! ***

OLD REVIEW:

OK, so I played for about 2.8 hours, and the performance issue is NOT just on Rift. I have a Vive and exceed the recommended requirements. GTX 1070 card, 24gb ram, i7 7700k @ 4.2ghz. This is what I have noticed. Turning creates what looks like compression artifacts and environment animations not particle based causes massive graphic lag/degradation. For example, when the floors move up as you are searching for the engineer's room. Standing completely still, the graphics would just go to a pixelated mess until the animation completed. This seemed to be the case any time a significant piece of the environment is moving. The game deaulted to High graphics, I moved them to Low and the issue persisted but was not as bad.

Overall, I enjoyed what I played, but the performance made it difficult to want to continue. I am NOT refunding as I do like the game and I hope some bug fixes come... like tomorrow. LOL. Fix the performance issue and you got a winner. I cannot currently recommend it to people NOT willing to deal with a performance issue but those people are far and few between. Until there is a patch that fixes this performance issue, I cannot recommend it, in spite of how much fun I did have. I will change my review once there is a performance patch.

The best and most fun workout I have ever had. The archery feels accurate and fools you into flexing when drawing and notching arrows. It gets fast paced rather quickly and when you get in the groove, you feel like an ultimate badass. It is basically a training sim but man is it done well. Bow mechanics that rivals the mechanics in the Lab, which is saying a lot given very few get it right. You shoot down holograms and dodge the projectiles. It is one of the few games where you actually look cool in the real world while you play it as you contort your body to dodge and shoot. You will get an intense core workout with this game, especially if you put your all into playing.

This is a strange review to do.

So I have tried this, Sansar and VRChat. This environment has elements that look way better than VRChat but it feels limited. Sansar, may as well just toss that one out. No one really is on there and it performs terribly (i7 7700k w/ gtx 1070ti 32GB Ram). So between this and VRChat, I find myself in VRChat more. It has a larger population and I have to admit, being able to upload my own Avatars is actually a bigger deal than I first thought. So far, everyone in AltSpace has a homogenous look given the limited avatar options.

I would like to see more from altspace, I see potential but this is really the wild west of VR Socializing and the battle is on. Will VRChat or AltSpace win it? I can only recommend it in the sense of watching the fight unfold.

A fun, comically dark game. It is short but it is an experience and it is free. This is definitely not for kids given the language and some parts are "gorey" but it is done in a comical way. Twisted yet strangely fun to run through. Replay value, none frankly but it is free so who can complain. Worth the download even for a one time playthrough.

DoomVFR who? This game is exactly what DoomVFR SHOULD have been. The freelocomotion works well, the controlled bullet time is awesome, the weapons feel accurate enough, the enemies are fantastic, the graphic quality is AAA and the gameplay puts other shooters like Raw Data and Arizona Sunshine on notice. This game sets the bar. The innervoice is the right amount of amusing and annoying. Very well done game and I want more!

I played one match and it was amazing! There were 4 of us in there. We had no idea what we were doing but we had a blast. I wish more people played this. I can see it being huge if more people did. Free weekend earned my money and it is on sale! Worth it!

If they add more player models and more environmets, this can be a VR contender for Overwatch.

This is an awesome dungeon crawler. The enemies are smart enough to dodge, the visuals are top notch and the combat is challenging while being satisfying. This game is one hell of a workout not less when playing as the archer. I live stream my progress daily and so far this game is up there. I have quite a few games that I am playing to review and this is one of my favorites.
