In a world of many good, long RPGs vying for your attention, this game does not deserve any of it. This game has the typical slow start of a JRPG, eventually hits a good rhythm, then finishes off with a multi-hour long exposition dump in an attempt to tie together a very sloppy, derivative overarching narrative. In addition, the writing for most of the characters is really shallow and one-note. You can really tell this game drags because less than *35%* of people who own this game have the achievement for reaching the credits, 2+ years after release.

Gameplay wise, it has its moments where it feels really satisfying, racking up 50+ hit combos with your entire toolset and killing off enemies with cinematic finishers, but I feel that it "caps out" in terms of what you can do with the system far too early (I stopped gaining new abilities about 5-8 hours before the end of the game).

Visually, the game has a great art style and a lot of variety in environments and settings, but I would be lying if I said it wasn't marred by the god awful pop-in issues. Within fights and cutscenes though, visuals and effects were top notch.

Ultimately, the game has aspects that I truly enjoyed, but they were too few and far between. This game is an easy skip, even on a sale.

Definitely a different take from Supergiant. It's basically a VN. If you're looking for a gameplay-oriented experience, this really isn't it. The things they usually do right (soundtrack, beautiful visuals) are all here, but it's very story-driven. Would not reccomend to people expecting stellar gameplay, but if you're into writing and world-building this is a great experience.
