This is next-gen VR. Many of the early games in VR were almost like VR demos. They had only just grasped the basics and were working with early technology. With a game like Alyx you feel like VR has finally caught up to the hype. Not only do you feel completely immersed in the surroundings of City 17, but you are an integral part of the story too. The attention to detail in Alyx is second to none, almost all objects are interactable, and a significant amount of time has been put into the flow and predicted behaviour of the player (thanks to significant play testing). The combat system feels natural and rewarding, and you find yourself skilling up in real life to make weapon selection, reloading and aiming better. The AI behind enemies is excellent and some of the extra-combat tools at your disposal like grenades, explosive surroundings and barnacles help take it beyond simple point and shoot. The ammo system will leave you feeling like you're constantly running on empty, which takes some getting used to but then becomes rewarding in its own right. Just 5 minutes in this breath-taking, immersive world will leave you hooked. I can't wait for official DLC or news that the team are starting work on the next version of Half Life in VR. From someone who has played and adored the HL series from #1 onward, this is a real testament to the series, and it gets a solid 10/10 from me.
