Probably the best game to come out in 2016.

Doom is an introduction to the franchise for a new generation and came into it like a duck to water without having to change any of the core things that made the franchise an icon of old PC gaming. It's all about killing every single demon in the most brutal manner that makes you lean forward towards your monitor after pressing 'F' on a low health enemy to obliterate them viscously for extra health.
It remains linear, action-packed and simple for one demographic and yet acheives a sense of labyrinthia for those with a more explorative mentality in its level designs that are chock-full of hidden secrets, weapon upgrades and even a decently developed lore for those who wish to know more about the mysterious characters that the protagonist 'Doomguy' couldn't care less about.
This brings me onto the fact that the Doomguy himself manages to be a more developed and relatable hero than many games that actively try to so in such subtle ways. While he may just seem like a generic brute, it's this generic brutality that forms his attitude towards the demons and the people he's working for (to not ruin the moment). He truly believes the only way is to kill them all. There's quite the clever juxtaposition in being the hell of hell so to say; the demons fear the one they call 'the doomslayer'.
The environments are truly spectacular, whether it be the cramped corridors of the UAC, the barren red desert of mars or the raging infernos of hell, you'll always feel at home obliterating demons with the awesome weapons (upgraded to your choice), mobile preator suit, power-ups and glory kills to the appropriate and pumping metal soundtrack responding to your gory massacre.

Hotline Miami is a game that I picked up in the sales for less than £3 and I wished I hadn't picked it up in the sales. I felt like I needed to pay more. The game embraces gore and grittiness to create an overall depressing atmosphere for Miami in the 80's which compliments it's simple yet expansive story throughout. While the LSD-like retro graphics were strange for me at first, I quickly adapted to the style. The gameplay is fluent and a death rarely ever feels like you've been cheated by the game due to it's 'glass cannon' approach to combat. One hit to kill; one hit to die. While the constant appearence of 'press R to restart' made me want to gouge my eyes out due to the difficulty of this game at parts, I never once was turned off by it. If anything, it motivated me to play it more. While at first glance, the gameplay may seem to be another run 'n' gun scenario, it is far from that. Once again as a result of the one shot to kill scenario, you'll find yourself planning a route and stratagising how to take out the enimies in the area. Will you lure them over with gunshots or silently kill him from behind? It makes for a personalised experience. Overall, I would highly reccomend this game, A Steven Hawking/ Donald Trump.
