Fantastic game and a great spiritual successor to Tales of the Neon sea by the same devs.
Translation quality is fine this time (unlike the pre-revised version of ToTnS), so unless you're an english teacher you won't have problems enjoying the plot.
Less puzzles this time, and they're a bit easier, which is fine.


One hint: if you're going for a 100% explore everything before entering a door/passage/ area you're supposed to go to, because stuff will get locked out and you'll have to load a save or use the chapter select option.

Like the game, dislike the glacial pace of development.
There's already 30-40 hours worth of content, but wait till 2025 when they maybe release the last 10% of the game, because you'll probably forget what it was about before they finish the last area.

Bought it a couple of months ago, there have been no changes. Must be terrible for people who probably passed from old age waiting for a release since the EA started.

I'll update the review when version 1.0 hits.

Edit: I updated the review since the frontline version (beta) now has the rest of the game. It's not 1.0 but close enough.

This might hit 1.0 in 2024.

This is the first PB game I regret buying. I was pretty disappointed with Gothic 3, but it was in no way as bad as this.

The plot is a mess, DX11 version will barely run od powerful hardware, DX12 has bugs that haven't been fixed for over half a year, and all that while looking like a game from early 2010's at best.

The exploration aspect is ok, and they did try to spice things up with some quests, but the overall presentation is terrible,

At the time of writing this I finished the game after 75 hours of fun filled adventuring.

This is not a mod, it's a full blown proper prequel to Gothic 1. In some regards it's better than the originals.
And in some it's worse. But even if it does at some PLOT MOMENTS take away control over your protagonist to show you something, It still captures the essence of Gothic.

Some spoilers ahead.

THE GOOD:
- You really are not "The Hero". Or a prophesied Chosen One. You're a guy who goes from penniless scrub to fairly wealthy adventurer, but there are still things you are not privy to. And you get burned because of that. Which is pretty unique from a gaming storytelling perspective.
- Multiple solutions to every quest. And they actually matter! You see the consequences of your choices long after you forgot you made them.
- Multiple ending worldstates. With slides.
- Lots of random encounters in places you already visited. You might find a crazy old man who will ask you for a backscratcher, an errant knight who wants to fight you or a drunken citizen asking you for a small loan. Or just directions.
- Generally stable for such a grand mod working on the antique ZENgine. One day we'll hopefully get to play it in OpenGothic :)
- A bit harder than Gothic 1/2 at the start, but not unforgivingly so like some other Gothic mods out there.


THE BAD
- You really are not "The Hero". You make friends, you help people, but the world does not revolve around you.
There are more important things happening in the background, and you're barely part of it.
One ending option even has literally you sitting things out on the sidelines and not rushing in to help. And in some ways that's a BETTER solution. Like one npc says "I like you, but you bring bad luck".
- The ending for the hero is...well, I think I get why they did what they did, but it still is quite dissappointing. Guess it's better than dying :D
- Some bugs, inconsistencies and broken cutscenes.But that can be fixed.
- I did not particularly enjoy feeling I need to gather anything that isn't nailed down just to get by in the first chapters (yes, after optimising my selling to proper traders). I still ended up with around 30k in gold, but those first 20-30 hours were a bit of a slog.
- I don't think I'll be able to play the originals again after this.

Surprisingly addictive.

Shame it didn't sell better.

The game has shortcomings, but it's a very pleasant metroidvania type platformer. It's a remake of Treasure Adventure Game with added quests, features, much better graphics and QOL improvements. While it can occasionaly be a bit clunky I never felt it was unfair. If I died fighting a boss it was because I made a mistake, not because the game failed to do what I wanted it to do.

I fully recommend buying this.

As for the laggy interface that people have reported: On Windows 10 it was laggy (went from 50-60fps to 12) on a subnotebook with and m7-6y75, but 60+ fps on a desktop with an Athlon 200GE. In both cases integrated graphics were used. So it doesn't really need a powerful PC to run properly.

Tl;DR : It's good and fully playable now.

Slightly longer version:

I like old RPG's, Fallout 1/2 and Baldur's Gate are amongst my favourites. However, before I played Grimrock (Yes, Grimrock, a different game )I have not known (or cared) about the existence of "blobbers". Wizardry VI is just the name of some game I've never tried, so you can hardly call me sentimental.

Why the prolonged intro? Because I absolutely love Grimoire.

It's challenging. Doesn't guide you through every step like most games and requires you to actually think your way through puzzles, riddles and conundrums. It's not unfair though, clues and/or solutions can be found by exploring and there's logic behind every one.

If you're familiar with the concept of "just one turn more and off I go" you might catch youself stopping a playthrough when your eyes start bleeding , your plants died of dehydration and your kindergarten-aged kid finishes college.

As for typical pros and cons well, they've been discussed by other reviewers. Just remember: bugs can be fixed, a flawed gameplay concept cannot ( or at least it very, very rarely is).

Play with GMDX 9.0.3 for the ultimate Deus Ex experience!

If you liked the classic Fallouts and/or other turn based RPG's don't ask questions, just buy this game.

You will absolutely not regret it.

With Expedition it's even better.
