Lil Nas X reimagines the Romanticism of the Cowboy life as lonely and nihilistic. The character is unfulfilled by a hedonistic life of consumerism, substance abuse, and adultery. He literally feels as if his life is a movie. He also has dissatisfaction with the indolence of his peers and subsequently feels no need to heed their advice. With nothing left to believe in or follow, the rider heads out with the only destination being the open road. In the same vein of Otis Redding’s “Sitting At The Dock of The Bay”, this song is an anthem of the modern age, and beautiful in the way it flawlessly melds folk music with trap. The brevity of the song fits its themes, and I can’t stop listening to it.
